Riccio Torrez’s two home runs and five runs batted in sparked the Arizona State Sun Devils to a victory over New Mexico in the 2011 season opener at Packard Stadium.o
Brady Rodgers had a strong outing as the newly minted Sun Devil ace. He pitched five innings of two hit baseball and did not give up a run.
ASU got the scoring started in the first as a Riccio Torrez single scored Johnny Ruettiger. Ruettiger stole two bases on the night and played well in the leadoff position.
In the second, a Ruettiger sacrifice fly scored Austin Barnes to make it 2-0 ASU.
In the third, Riccio Torrez led off the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to left field, his second RBI of the game.
The Sun Devils really broke the game open in the fourth. After Ruettiger reached base on an error and MacPhee drew a walk, Ricco Torrez blasted his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left field. ASU would add another run in the inning to make it 8-0. This would mark the exit of UNM starting pitcher Gera Sanchez.
That would be all the scoring from the Sun Devils as UNM relief pitcher Alexis Garza came in and pitched five scoreless innings.
New Mexico would get two runs on the board in the 7th inning off of ASU RP Alex Blackford.
The Sun Devils will play two more today against New Mexico. You can hear the second of those two right here on The Blaze 1330 AM. Estimated start time is 4:15pm.
