A game that was close the entire way eventually tipped to the Richmond Spiders, who move to (7-2) following a 67-61 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Sun Devils struggled offensively during the game shooting 34.5 percent from the field, compared to Richmond’s 49 percent.

“Your defense has to be really good if you’re gonna shoot 34.5 percent from the field,” said ASU head coach Herb Sendek.”

Sendek also talked about how the opponent’s scores seem more magnified right now.

“We just don’t have a large margin for error, so every basket we give up, it seems like a touchdown,” said Sendek.

ASU had four players in double figures, Kyle Cain, Trent Lockett, Rihards Kuksiks and Ty Abbott. Lockett continue his hot start to the season, coming up with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

For Richmond, Justin Harper dominated in the first half. He also came up with some big shots in the second half, finishing with 23 points and seven rebounds.

“Justin is a great player,” said Richmond head coach Chris Mooney. “We’ve said since he was young that he was an NBA prospect.”

The Spiders allowed ASU to stay in the game in the 1st half, and the teams swapped the lead in the second half. But Richmond used a strong finish to the second half coupled with missed opportunities by the Sun Devils to pull out the victory.

“When the game was free flowing, I thought we were a little bit better than they were,” said Mooney.

Another key stat: Richmond had 26 points in the paint compared to ASU’s eight points.

ASU falls to (3-4) and is next in action Saturday, December 11 at home vs. Gardner-Webb. You can listen to the game right here at www.blazeradioonline.com starting at Noon MST.
