On a day when ASU honored its 13 seniors before the game, the Sun Devils came out with an inspired performance Friday against the UCLA Bruins at Sun Devil Stadium, winning 55-34.
Sophomore quarterback Brock Osweiler replaced the injured Steven Threet in the 1st quarter and had a career day, going 27/36 for 380 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown.
UCLA led 17-0 with 2:33 left in the first quarter. The Bruins passing game, which had been dormant almost all season long, came alive, as Richard Brehaut hooked up with Randal Carroll for 46-yard touchdown pass.
ASU’s offense found a new rhythm with Osweiler in the game. The Sun Devils scored just over a minute later as Aaron Pflugrad caught a 5-yard touchdown pass.
The Sun Devils would come up with two more touchdowns in the 2nd quarter, as Osweiler found Mike Willie and Gerell Robinson, respectively, giving ASU a 21-17 lead.
It appeared the Devils would take that four point lead into halftime. UCLA PK Kai Forbath missed a 53-yard field goal. But a leaping penalty on ASU’s James Brooks allowed the Bruins kicker another opportunity, this time from 38 yards out. The reigning Lou Groza Award winner connected to bring the Bruins within one point going into halftime.
ASU would get a big 79-yard pass from Osweiler to TJ Simpson to start the 2nd half. Thomas Weber would finish the drive with a 21-yard field goal to extend the Sun Devils lead to 24-20.
UCLA drove the ball right down the field on its next drive and would end up with a 1st and goal thanks to two ASU unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. But on 4th and goal from the 1, the ASU defense kept UCLA out of the endzone and kept them off the board.
The Devils would strike quickly after that as Cameron Marshall’s 71 yard run gave the Sun Devils a 31-20 lead.
UCLA would get points on its next drive. The Bruins went 71 yards in 12 plays, as Nelson Rosario caught a 21-yard pass from Brehaut for the UCLA touchdown. That made it 31-27 ASU.
The Sun Devils would take over from there, scoring 24 unanswered points to turn this game into a rout.
Jamal Miles took the next kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.
Osweiler would record a passing and rushing TD in the 4th quarter with a Thomas Weber 37 yard field goal sandwiched in between. ASU took a 55-27 lead. UCLA would score a late touchdown to make it 55-34. That was the final score.
The Sun Devils compiled 595 yards of total offense. Cameron Marshall had 17 carries for 148 yards and a touchdown. Deantre Lewis had six receptions for 105 yards, including a 70-yard reception in the first half.
Next on the slate for the Sun Devils is the University of Arizona. ASU will travel to Tucson to play the Wildcats at 6pm Arizona time on Thursday, December 2.
