ASU football shuts out Washington State on Homecoming

Last weekend in Berkeley, the Arizona State Sun Devils suffered their worst loss of the season, falling 50-17 to the California Golden Bears.

All week long, media members and fans questioned ASU’s resiliency, and wondered if the Sun Devils would be the first Pac-10 team to lose to Washington State this year. Well, so much for that thought.

Led by quarterback Steven Threet, the Sun Devils destroyed Washington State 42-0, in front of a Homecoming crowd of 44,903.

Threet showed no ill signs of a concussion he suffered last week, completing 26 of 32 passes for 300 yards and three touchdowns.

The Sun Devils (4-4, 2-3) got rolling early, as Threet led a 15-play, 76-yard drive, capped by a seven-yard touchdown run by Cameron Marshall. The junior quarterback completed 9 of 10 passes on the drive.

ASU’s second drive was just as impressive: four plays, 68 yards, ending with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Threet to Jamal Miles.

Freshman running back Deantre Lewis added a three-yard touchdown run in the early part of the second quarter, extending ASU’s lead to 21-0. But it was Threet who put the icing on the cake at the end of the first half, as he led a three-play, 56-yard drive, capped off by an 18-yard touchdown pass to Miles, giving ASU a 28-0 lead heading into the locker room.

Threet completed 23 of 29 passes in the first half for 237 yards and two touchdowns. His night ended early in the third quarter after hooking up with Marshall for a seven-yard score.

It was a nice bounce back win for the Sun Devils, who were ran out of Memorial Stadium last weekend.

“Coming off the performance we had a week ago, it was to see us come out and compete and show a lot of character, cause that’s not easy to do,” head coach Dennis Erickson said.

ASU must win three of its remaining four games to be bowl eligible, a feat that will be very challenging considering two of those four games are against teams currently ranked in the top 25.

“We sitting at 4-4 with four opportunities left,” Threet said, “We’re focused on getting prepared and trying the play the best game we can next Saturday.”

The challenge starts next week in Los Angeles, as the Sun Devils take on the USC Trojans in the Coliseum.
