Eleven years ago today was a very significant day for the Arizona State football program, because 11-years ago today was the last time ASU beat the University of Southern California, a streak the Sun Devils hope to end tonight as they take on the Trojans in the LA Coliseum.
We know ASU will come into this matchup with a lot of confidence after beating Washington State by 42-points last weekend. What we don’t know is how will USC respond after losing its “Super Bowl” last weekend to Oregon?
Since the Trojans are banned from a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions, they put a lot of their stock in trying to defeat the best team in the country last week. The Ducks simply shrugged them off, winning 53-32, and leaving the Men of Troy deflated.
USC is led by sophomore quarterback Matt Barkley, one of the best in the Pac-10. What makes Barkley so dangerous is the fact that he has great wide receivers on either side of him in Ronald Johnson and Robert Woods. The two receivers have combined for 1103 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches.
USC also has a solid run game, led by Marc Tyler, Allen Bradford, and Stanley Havili.
The ASU players have called this trip a “business” trip. A lot of players from the roster are from the Southern California area, so plenty of their family and friends will be at the Coliseum.
This is a very crucial game for the Sun Devils’ bowl hopes, as they must win three of their final four to become bowl eligible.
