Greetings and welcome to Wells Fargo Arena for ASU basketball. Today, the Sun Devils play host to the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs. This is the first game of a doubleheader at Wells Fargo Arena today. The ASU women’s team plays Colorado State at 2:30.
I’ll give a dollar to the first person who can tell me where Gardner-Webb is located.
We have a winner: Tyler Emerick of the State Press.
There can’t be more than 150 students here. I saw more people waiting in line to get into The Vue last night.
This game isn’t televised, but you can watch an online stream at www.foxsportsarizona.com.
Here are today’s starting lineups
Gardner-Webb: Laron Buggs, Brian McNair, Jon Moore, Stefon Johnson, Luke Engelken
ASU: Jamelle McMillan, Ty Abbott, Kyle Cain, Trent Lockett, Rihards Kuksiks
1st Half
17:24- Sloppy play early on as ASU has already turned the ball over three times. Kyle Cain hits a pair of free throws to give the Sun Devils a 5-0 lead.
14:06- I can’t decide who worse: Houston Baptist or Gardner-Webb. It’s a tossup. Sun Devils lead 14-3.
13:08- First media timeout of the game, and ASU leads 14-5. Kyle Cain and Ty Abbott have combined for nine of the 14 points.
11:14- Under-12 timeout, and ASU is up 16-8. The Sun Devils are shooting 42% from the floor.
9:03- Herb Sendek pulls Chanse Creekmur and Keala King after they take bad shots. I’m all for discipline, but you have to let these freshman play through their mistakes otherwise they’ll never learn.
7:52- We’ve reached the under-8 timeout, and ASU leads 19-11. Per Doug Haller of the Arizona Republic, ASU has missed 8 of its last 10 shots.
6:33- Probably seeing Haller’s tweets, ASU has promptly hit its last two shots.
3:54- Final media timeout of the half, and ASU leads 29-16. Solid first half from Kyle Cain, who has eight points and six rebounds.
0:00- At the half, ASU leads Gardner-Webb 37-25. Rihards Kuksiks leads the Sun Devils with 11 points. ASU is shooting 42% from three point range, and 41% overall.
The 37 first half points are the most for ASU in the first half of any game this year. No bench players scored.
2nd Half
Kyle Cain is on double-double alert, now with 8 points and 7 rebounds.
17:28- ASU leads 43-29, but this game should be much closer. Luckily for the Sun Devils, Gardner-Webb hasn’t been able to make any of its chip shots.
15:45- First media timeout of the half, and ASU is up 46-31.
12:38- ASU still unable to fully shake off Gardner-Webb, up 46-34.
11:39- At the under-12 timeout, ASU leads 46-36. The Sun Devils haven’t scored in over three and a half minutes and have only scored nine points in the half. Gardner-Webb is shooting just 27% from the floor in the half, otherwise this game could be much closer.
10:30- ASU breaks a dry spell that lasted over five minutes. The Sun Devils lead 52-38 thanks to three-pointers from Ty Abbott and Rihards Kuksiks.
7:51- Under-8 timeout, ASU is up 54-43.
3:54- ASU has finally pulled away, up 65-46, thanks to a 9-0 run. Ty Abbott, Rihards KuksiksĀ and Trent Lockett have combined for 49 of the team’s 65 points.
0:53- With the game in hand, Herb Sendek goes to an all freshman lineup, consisting of Corey Hawkins, Keala King, Jordan Bachynski and Chanse Creekmur.
0:00- Your final: ASU 71, Gardner-Webb 48. Sun Devils improve to 4-4 on the year and will take on Nevada this Friday in Reno.
