A stellar 43 save effort in net from Arizona State goalie Mark Schacker helped the 3rd ranked Sun Devils to win 5-4 over the 13th ranked Rhode Island Rams last night at Oceanside Ice Arena.
The first period was controlled by Rhode Island. They skated better, had fewer turnovers, had more shots, and had the puck for longer than the Sun Devils. However, none of those stats helped the Rams get any goals, and the Devils would capitalize on both of their good scoring chances. The first came on a power play, as Darcy Charrois put the Sun Devils up 1-0 with seven and a half minutes left in the period. Two minutes and ten seconds later, Mark Chadwick would slap in ASU’s second goal, as they would go into intermission up 2-0 over the Rams.
Right out of the locker room, with 1:21 gone in the 2nd period, the Rams would answer back, as Robert Beggi would blast a slap shot past Shacker to bring the Rams back within one. Six minutes later, Marc Wilhite would sneak a wrist shot past URI goalie Paul Kenny from the low slot, putting the Devils back up 3-1. The Rams would answer quickly, as 32 seconds later Shawn Tingley would beat Mark Schacker to bring the Rams back within one. With 6:25 left in the period, Jason Maltese would deflect a Colin Hekle slap shot past Kenny to put the Sun Devils up 4-2. Rhode Island would answer quickly again, this time on the power play when Alan Dionne beat Schacker to bring URI back within one. With just over a minute and a half left in the second period, URI’s Justin Krute would find himself on a breakaway, he was tripped right in front of Schacker by one of the Sun Devil defenders, and the referees awarded him a penalty shot. Krute skated in from the right side and went top shelf glove side past Schacker to tie the game 4-4.
ASU would score the next goal, as 4:13 into the 3rd period, Colin Hekle would deflect in a Paul Scola slap shot to give the Sun Devils the lead. However, the real story of the third period was the play of ASU goalie Mark Schacker. The ASU net minder saved all 18 shots that were fired at him in the period, giving him a total of 43 saves for the game, and giving the Sun Devils the 5-4 win. The total shots were 47-32 in favor of Rhode Island.
