Welcome to Sun Devil Stadium for the 2010 Arizona State season opener. The Sun Devils begin their campiagn against the Portland State Vikings. Follow along as The Blaze provides live updates
Pregame- ASU wins the coin toss, and chooses to receive. We’ll see Noel Mazzone’s new offense right off the bat
1st Quarter
Kyle Middlebrooks returns the opening kickoff to the 13 yard line
14:39- Sloppy start to the game for ASU. Two dropped passes, a false start, and an overthrow force the Sun Devils to go three-and-out.
ASU’s defense a bit shaky to start as Portland State is able to pick up two first downs in a 34 yard drive down field.
11:16- The ASU defense settles down and holds Portland State to a 42 yard field goal. Vikings lead 3-0.
9:05- ASU responds nicely with a six play, 80 yard drive capped off by Cameron Marshall’s 50 yard touchdown run. Sun Devils lead 7-3.
7:16- Eddie Elder picks off Viking quarterback Connor Kavanaugh near midfield for the first ASU interception of the year.
6:30- Cameron Marshall takes it to the endzone again, this time from 38 yards. He has carried the ball three times for 99 yards and two touchdowns. ASU takes a 14-3 lead.
4:46- ASU’s defensive line is starting to take over. The Vikings are called for intentional grounding in the endzone, resulting in an ASU safety. Sun Devils up 16-3.
3:14- Steven Threet has completed five of nine passes for 40 yards. The Sun Devil offense has settled down since the opening drive.
1:17 Thomas Weber misses a 33-yard field goal, and the Sun Devils still lead 16-3.
At the end of the first quarter, ASU leads 16-3.
2nd Quarter
With the Sun Devils up 16-3, students are already heading for the exits. One quarter of standing in the heat seems to be enough.
12:09- A roughing the passer penalty gives Portland State a new set of downs from ASU’s 33-yard line. Keep in mind that the Sun Devils were the most penalized team in the Pac-10 last year.
9:47- Zach Brown drills his second field goal of the game, this time from 54 yards, as the Vikings cut ASU’s lead to 10.
7:55- Steven Threet’s 23-yard touchdown pass to Mike Willie gets called back because of an ineligible man down field penalty.
7:47- Threet connects with Deantre Lewis on the very next play for a 28-yard touchdown. ASU up 23-6.
5:55- ASU is called for its seventh penalty of the first half. Really the only negative of the half, thus far.
1:53- Steven Threet may have his favorite target already, as Aaron Pflugrad has four receptions for 57 yards.
1:30- Threet connects with Kerry Taylor for a 42-yard touchdown pass. The play is under review, however.
After review, the ruling on the field is overrturned, but it’s still a gain of 37 yards. ASU ball from Portland State’s five-yard line.
1:22- Cameron Marshall takes it to the house on the very next play for his third touchdown of the game. ASU up 29-3.
Good first half for the Devils, as they lead 30-6. Stay tuned for second half coverage.
