Random notes: Half of the students are gone. ASU baseball coach Tim Esmay is in the press box.
3rd quarter
Portland State gets the ball to start the half.
14:05- Lawrence Guy walks off the field with a limp. Not a great sign for ASU. We’ll have more news on him as we hear it.
12:39- Steven Threet starts the second half. Keep in mind that Dennis Erickson said Brock Osweiler will get some playing time this game.
12:23- On the first offensive play of the half, Threet connects with Deantre Lewis for a 62-yard touchdown pass that gives ASU a 37-6 lead. Threet is now 13-19, with 237 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis has three catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
Per an ASU official, Steven Threet’s 237 passing yards are the most by an ASU quarterback in his first start. The previous record was 160 by Jeff Krohn back in 2000.
9:47- Threet throws the first interception of his Sun Devil career. Vikings take over at their own 25-yard line.
7:45- Connor Kavanaugh connects on a 62-yard pass to Raymond Fry to put Portland State at the Sun Devil 25-yard line.
5:21- A couple of penalties force the Vikings to kick a field goal, as Zach Brown connects from 47 yards. ASU’s lead is now 37-9.
5:13- Brock Osweiler now in at quarterback for ASU.
4:12- Jamal Miles follows up a 33-yard reception with a nine yard touchdown run. ASU leads 44-9.
It’s all ASU at the end of the third quarter. Devils up 44-9.
4th quarter
14:09- Osweiler shows off his mobility as he runs for 20-yards to put ASU at the Portland State 30-yard line.
11:35- Deantre Lewis caps off a 14-play drive with his third touchdown of the night, his first rushing. The Sun Devil running backs have accounted for all seven touchdowns. ASU up 51-9.
Per an ASU stat official, the 51 points the Sun Devils have are the most since 2006, when they scored 52 against Nevada.
I was on the field for the final seven minutes of the game, so my apologies for not updating the final few minutes. Thomas Weber nailed a 52-yard field goal to put the finishing touches on a 54-9 ASU victory. The Sun Devils are 1-0, and will play host to Northern Arizona next Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
