The ASU volleyball team returns to Wells Fargo Arena this weekend in the ASU Sheraton Tournament. The Sun Devils (4-5) will face a trio of challenging teams in their final home tournament of the season.
All of ASU’s competitors are off to strong starts in 2010.
- Michigan: The Wolverines hold a No. 21 national ranking and an 8-1 record. Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman is enjoying a strong start to her final year in Ann Arbor. Zimmerman has 52 kills and 81 digs so far this season.
“Michigan has had a nice season to date,” ASU coach Jason Watson said. “They are a pretty physical Big Ten team.”
- Pacific: The Tigers received nine votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll. Pacific competed in the Wolf Pack Invitational last week, and defeated ASU’s state rivals No. 24 Arizona 3-1 and Northern Arizona 3-0.
- Utah: The Utes feature a youthful team in 2010. Freshman outside Morgan Odale is developing into a solid playmaker on the court. Through the first nine games of the season, Odale has smashed an impressive 121 kills.
“Youth and inexperience can go both ways,” Watson said. “I think that they are going to rely on these young athletes.”
The Sun Devils will face Michigan on Friday night, and then take on Pacific and Utah in a doubleheader on Saturday.
Following this weekend’s tournament, the Sun Devils jump into conference play.
The Pac-10 conference figures to be one an ultra competitive conference once again this season. No. 1 Stanford will arrive in Tempe next weekend to face off against the Sun Devils.
