FINAL: UA wins match 3-2 over Sun Devils

The bitter rivalry between UA and ASU resumes tonight.

The Territorial Cup Series takes place tonight at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. It’s the second match of the season between the in-state rivals.

On Oct. 1st, UA dominated the Sun Devils (9-12, 4-5 Pac-10) at the McKale Center in Tucson. It was a three set sweep for UA who won by set scores of 26-24, 25-19, and 25-12.

Since their loss against UA, the Sun Devils have garnered a 4-2 record which included a four match Pac-10 winning streak.

The highlight of the first half of Pac-10 play was sweeping No. 5 USC and No. 10 UCLA in the same weekend at Wells Fargo Arena. It was the first time in 15 years that the sun Devils managed to sweep those two schools in the same weekend.

Sun Devil Starting Lineup:

First set:

Sun Devils and Wildcats exchange points to sit at 2-2 before Erica Wilson slammed the kill for ASU to inch them ahead 3-2.

Malia Marquardt continues her strong play with a kill to make it 10-9 ASU.

Mendivil smacks the kill for ASU, but Preach’s service error gives UA a point, thus a 11-11 tie.

An extremely close opening set so far, ASU leads 19-17 as UA calls the timeout.

UA coaches not thrilled with the officiating in this one.   Cats tie this set at 19-19 prompting a timeout from ASU coach Jason Watson.

ASU unable to respond with some momentum, UA wins the first set 25-22 over ASU.

SECOND SET: Sun Devils off to a hot start here in 2nd set.

Danica Mendivil and Malia Marquardt with kills to make it 4-0 ASU. UA calls the early timeout.

ASU looking like a different team in second set with a 9-4 lead.

Sun Devils have to keep the pressure on UA, as is still early in set.   UA with the service ace to make it 10-7 ASU.

Tiffany Owens with the kill for Ua, ASU’s lead is down to two, 11-9.

Marquardt with the block for ASU. It’s now 14-9 ASU, UA coach Dave Rubio calls for a timeout.

Thanks to a beautiful kill from Erica Wilson, ASU now leads 21-12.  Preach to serve, and UA’s Dosty hits a kill.

ASU looking confident after a roughf first set, got to like it so far.

The Sun Devils claim the 2nd set, 25-15 to even the match at 1-1.

THIRD SET:

UA started well with a 4-1 lead and plenty of momentum , ASU has to steal that if it wants any chance at winning.

Wilson again for ASU, 3-4.

The Sun Devils really struggling here in third set, down 4-10.

UA’s Dosty smacks a kill to extend the Wildcats’ lead to 15-6, ASU continues to struggle, Watson calls the timeout

ASU looking to mount a comeback, a massive one at that, down 9-17 and a UA timeout.

Plenty of energy, excitement in this arena for the Sun Devils. They have to capitalize on it.

WILSON with a kill for ASU, could a comeback be underway?

UA picking up where it left off, now up 21-13, a lot going right for the Cats.

Wildcats smash ASU 25-13 in set three to take 2-1 match lead.

FOURTH SET:

UA picked up where it left off, but ASU has taken a 6-5 lead thanks to a service error from the Cats

ASU looking to run with the momentum here, up 7-5 now

UA just gave ASU a gift with an out of bounds serve to make it 11-11

Mendivil powering ASU of late, two crucial kills to make it 17-12 ASU, what an addition she has been to the squad this year.

Sarah Reaves dominates late in the set and takes a Highmark set and smashes it onto UA to win the set 25-17, match tied at 2-2. WE ARE GOING TO A FIFTH SET!!!

FIFTH and FINAL SET:

Reaves gets ASU on the board, down 1-2 with Wilson back to serve.

Sun Devils hoping to sideout here after Watson called the timeout. Although trailing, ASU did manage to comeback from a small deficit in the previous set.

UA steals this one from ASU 15-10  and the match 3-2.
