LOS ANGELES – The Arizona State Lady Devils had already swept the Oregon State Lady Beavers this season, but it is very hard to beat a team three times in a season.
But the 3rd seeded Lady Sun Devils did just that on Wednesday, defeating the 10th seeded Beavers 50-44 in the first round of the Pac-10 women’s tournament at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.
ASU led most of the game. But the Beavers stayed in the game the whole way. “We are not really comfortable putting teams away. We make it interesting,” said ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne.
Oregon State cut it to 3 points near the end, but the Sun Devils were able to close it out, thanks to using all 35 seconds of the shot clock on a possession near the end of the game.
The Sun Devils outrebounded Oregon State 35-25. The offensive rebounding edge favored ASU 16-7. This was one of the key differences in the game. Especially considering that Oregon State shot 41 percent from the field and the Sun Devils shot 36 percent.
Dymond Simon led all scorers with 13 points. Sage Indendi and Alyssa Martin both had 10 to lead the Beavers.
ASU is back in action tomorrow at 4pm AZ time. They will play the winner of #6 Cal and #7 Washington. That game happens tonight at 8:15pm AZ time.
