Tenaya Watson had a career-high 25 points, leading the Arizona State Sun Devils women’s basketball team to a 79-66 upset of 16th ranked DePaul.
The game was tied at 33 at halftime, but the Sun Devils were able to pull away in the 2nd half, leading by as much as 19 in the latter stages of the game.
“I got hot, and I just kept shooting,” said Watson, who also tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight.
PG Dymond Simon tied her career-high in points with 24. Seven of those points came at the free throw line. Simon also had seven assists in the game.
“I just had a lot of fun out there working with my teammates, and they were getting it done for me tonight,” said Simon.
ASU outrebounded DePaul 46-32, which included 16 offensive rebounds for the Sun Devils.
“This is the first game in a while that we’ve controlled the boards,” said ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne. “I thought that was a huge highlight and a big reason for our win.”
Felicia Chester led the way for the Blue Demons with 16 points. DePaul struggled from the free throw line, shooting 56.3% from the charity stripe.
This is ASU’s first win over a ranked team since defeating #9 Texas A&M in the Sweet Sixteen in 2009.
“DePaul is a really good team, this was a great win,” said Turner Thorne. “For us, it’s huge, cause it gets the nation’s attention back to ASU women’s basketball.”
DePaul defeated then #3 Stanford at home 91-71 just last week.
