The Arizona State women’s basketball team overcame a slow start to beat New Mexico, 55-40, in the ASU Classic Championship game.
The Lady Lobos jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first 11 minutes, but the Lady Devils responded 23-6 run, including 14 unanswered points, to take a 25-15 lead heading into the locker room. ASU used another 14-0 run in the second half to take a 37-19 lead with 11:54 left. The team led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
Dymond Simon, who scored a team-high 18 points, including 10 straight in the first half, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Simon was the catalyst for ASU when the game was tied at 13 in the first half, hitting back-to-back three-pointers and back-to-back layups.
“It just wasn’t me,” Simon said. “My teammates were finding me in open shots, and it was definitely up to me to knock those shots down.”
Becca Tobin, who sat out yesterday’s game against Cal Poly with a strained tendon, returned to action, and started alongside Kimberly Brandon in the frontcourt. The senior forward had six points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Devils (5-2) have a full week off before playing host to Colorado State next Saturday, which head coach Charli Turner Thorne thinks will help the team immensely.
“It’ll be nice to get some extra rest and practice this week,” she said. “It only gets tougher from here. We have a great opportunity in December to build our resume and get some great wins.”
