Good morning! It is Field Trip Day at Wells Fargo Arena as the ASU Women’s Basketball (11-4, 3-2 Pac-10) team hosts Washington St. (4-14, 2-4).

Pregame

As part of an annual tradition, ASU hosts thousands of kids for an early afternoon contest.  All I know, is I would have loved to have had this field trip while I was in school.

With thousands of young kids, this place will be loud this afternoon.

20:00, 1st Half

Starting Lineups

WSU:

#1 April Cook

#2 Ireti Amojo

#3 Katie Madison

#11 Jazmine Perkins

#33 Carly Noyes

ASU:

#1 Dymond Simon

#12 Alex Earl

#25 Kimberly Brandon

#32 Becca Tobin

#35 Tenaya Watson

15:51, 1st Half

Washington St. holds a 6-5 lead at the first media timeout of the day.  Early on, turnovers are hurting both teams, just like last year’s meeting in Tempe.

11:24, 1st Half

The Cougars lead 12-11.  Sun Devils are shooting exactly 40% from the field, but have missed badly on all three of their three point attempts.  Kimberly Brandon has 5 points and 4 rebounds for ASU.

7:47, 1st Half

Washington St. has a 18-14 lead over ASU.  The Cougars did have a 18-11 lead, but Tenaya Watson finally opens up the lid on the three point shot for ASU to cut the deficit to four.

3:25, 1st Half

The Cougars opened up their biggest lead of the game at 27-20, but a layup by Janae Fulcher cuts it to 27-22 at the final media timeout of the half.  The Cougars are shooting 50% from the field and are a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown.

Halftime

ASU closes the half with a five point possession to cut Washington St.’s lead to 33-29 at the break.  Dymond Simon and Tenaya Watson are keeping ASU in the game with 9 points apiece.  The Cougars are getting good looks at the basket and converting.

In the meantime, it’s time for mascot basketball.

15:30, second half

ASU has taken a 42-41 lead, but it could be a much bigger lead.  The Sun Devils have missed numerous layups early in the second half.  The Cougars are still shooting the ball well, but turnovers are hurting.

11:14, second half

While the start of the second half was a success for ASU, the last few minutes have been a struggle.  The Sun Devils are turning the ball over left and right and not converting on good looks at the basket.  As a result, WSU has retaken a 49-44 lead.

7:57, second half

Critical stretch coming up for ASU, they trail WSU 52-46.  I can’t even begin to count how many easy shots the Sun Devils have missed today.

3:57, second half

Washington St. is trying to hold of ASU.  Cougars hold a 55-51 lead.  ASU still shooting 36% from the field, while WSU is at 51.2%.

Washington St. 71, Arizona St. 65

The Sun Devils play the foul and chase game, but the Cougars sink their free throws to hold on.  Not a good loss for ASU, certainly a game they should have won.  The Sun Devils fall to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in Pac-10 play.  Washington St. is now 5-14 and 3-3.
