BJRNCK is a Grammy nominated R&B artist who released “Safety,” on Aug. 19. It is a song that touches on vulnerability and being secure with a significant other. This is the third song in her newest project along with “Club” and “Crazy.”
In addition, she has collaborated with artists such as Omarion and recently with Dess Dior for “IDC,” on Sept. 5. She was also on the soundtrack for the anime, Cannon Busters for “Showdown.”
In her newest project, she explored themes of womanhood such as the emotional complexities of being a woman.
“As a woman, one day I might be feeling this way, the next day I might be feeling another,” BJRNCK said. “You never know what you’re going to get but they all make up versions of me at the end of the day and I feel like my album represents that.”
She continued that “Club” represents a girl looking for love, and “Crazy” showcases taking an interest in someone but not feeling secure in that relationship. “Safety” focuses on being in that relationship and communicating her needs.
“The whole body of work, essentially kind of tells a story of me figuring out who I am, how I need to be loved, how to love myself, and how to just allow someone else to love me as well,” BJRNCK said.
She also opened up about the difficulties of being vulnerable with a significant other for not only women, but men.
“Usually people get with you and they try to make you who they want you to be,” BJRNCK said. “So, finding someone who allows you to be yourself is really important and that makes me feel safe.”
Despite now being a single, “Safety” originally was not going to be part of this project. It was only when her mixing engineer offered to mix it for free that she released it.
“He was like ‘I’ll mix this for free if you put this on the album’, so I was like ‘Well, I can’t really beat that deal,’” she said.
Although BJRNCK is now based in Los Angeles, she was raised in Chicago where she was introduced to music through her church’s choir. Later at 13, she began recording. Now the 27-year-old is signed to Geffen Records.
The name “BJRNCK” is a shortened version of her last name Bewernick. The reason behind this was to prevent any preconceptions.
“If you put BJRNCK, question mark, that’s going to make someone look and be like, ‘What is that?’, ‘It don’t even have vowels’, ‘I wonder what that is’,” BJRNCK said.
BJRNCK described her music as a story of wanting to be loved but also loving herself and not allowing another to prevent that. To stay true to this message, she and her team put in time.
“I don’t just put things out, like we've been working on this album for like two years,” BJRNCK said. “Everything you see, every detail, like my internal team, my label, it’s so specific and particular.”
BJRNCK expressed that she lost confidence over time because of how long she’s been in the industry. However, she reclaimed that through this latest project due to becoming more involved like writing the majority of her songs.
“Somebody gave me some really good advice, it was like make songs that nobody can take away from you,” BJRNCK said. “So, being very, very hands on and not really caring if people are going to like it or not.”
According to BJRNCK, through her music she wants women and girls to understand that they are not alone and that sometimes she herself doesn’t understand who she is.
“I want them to know that you do not have to compromise yourself to be loved and to love someone,” BJRNCK said. “So be ready to grow as a person, as a woman when you listen to my music.”
