ASU Women's Hockey Faces Defensive Challenges Against McKendree University

After a standout win against its rivals to the south last week, the Arizona State women’s hockey team was looking to keep itself in the win column after two losses in a row against Minot State and the University of Rhode Island.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t possible for the Sun Devils as they started their four-game road trip with a 0-1 loss to McKendree University.

Thursday night's game brought ASU’s record to 5-2-1 while the Bearcats’ record improved to 10-4.

Graduate forward Brittney Kambeitz scored the game-winning goal for McKendree in the second period. She was assisted by freshman forward Olivia Imperato.

However, credit needs to be given to freshman goalie Mya Glaister, who was able to block 31/32 of the shots made by the Bearcats. This was only her third game in her collegiate career, and she's shaping up to be successful with a save percentage of 95%.

Glaister is coming off of earning her first collegiate shutout against Arizona during her second start ever for the team.

The second period had the least action out of the three, yet it was the only time during the game that a player scored. Not only was it the only period without any penalties, but the Bearcats had the fewest shots on goal the entire game. McKendree only shot five in the second period, compared to 15 in the first and 12 in the third.

ASU allowed the Bearcats to have two power plays in the first and third periods, with two Sun Devil starters being handed penalties. Junior forward Brianne Powell got a two-minute penalty for tripping in the first period, and sophomore forward Kyly Laybolt had a two-minute penalty for roughing in the third.

It was a rough night for both ASU’s offense and defense, with the Sun Devils only shooting 24 shots on goal. This is a significant decrease from their previous games, where they made 40 against Arizona and 33 against Jamestown.

ASU and McKendree are constant rivals, with the Bearcats currently holding the better record over the Sun Devils. Both teams are currently in the top ten of the ACHA, with McKendree being ranked No. 3 and ASU being ranked No. 7.
