Game 1: Friday, Feb. 20
From the start, the Sun Devils exploded early on and into the second period. However, the Wildcats battled back late in the third period.
In overtime, ASU capitalized, as sophomore forward Kyly Laybolt pocketed the game-winning goal, to secure a 4-3 victory in Tucson.
Over the course of the first two-thirds of Friday's game, it was all Sun Devils, with goals scored by sophomore defenseman Kate Streek, her second on the season, and freshman forward/ defenseman Kelzi Olsen, her sixth.
However, U of A cut into the ASU lead by one with a goal by freshman forward Lilly Howell, scoring her 17th goal on the season, in the late stages of the period.
Throughout the third period, both teams went head-to-head, netting goals until an open slapshot by junior forward Kylie Brown, her 12th goal of the season, put the Sun Devils up one with 10 minutes remaining.
With whatever stamina was left in the tank for Arizona, its ability to tie off a goal by freshman forward Kenzie Carson, her team's leading 18th goal this season, forced overtime.
Although the Sun Devils outpowered the Wildcats, a late turnover from Arizona resulted in Laybolt sealing the game shut.
In the net, freshman goalie Mya Glaister saved 43 of 46 shots against the Wildcats, showing the fans of ASU that she’s a wall in the crease.
Game 2: Saturday, Feb. 21
After an up-and-down finish on Friday, Arizona State rebounded with a 5-0 shutout over the Arizona Wildcats, handing freshman goalie Mya Glasiter her fifth shutout of the season and acquiring the Cactus Cup sweep in Tucson.
The Sun Devils dominated Saturday's game from the start. Junior forward Liv Leavelle opened up the scoring midway through the first period with her second goal of the season.
For ASU, the scoring continued early in the second period when Laybolt found the net twice in under a minute, netting her third goal this weekend. This provided a crucial insurance goal for the Sun Devils.
Building on Laybolt's dominance in the second period, ASU added two more goals from sophomore forward Taylor Bierlmeier, scoring off a rebound from Wildcat freshman goalie Olivia Sorlie.
With the last remaining seconds on the clock, the Sun Devils put the cherry on top with a heater from Brown to net the fifth and final goal.
Saturday’s game ended perfectly for freshman goalie Mya Glaister. She recorded her fifth shutout of the season and grabbed her eighth win, capping an impressive year.
In addition to the sweep for the Sun Devils, they’ll improve to (14-8-1-1) while Arizona falls to (10-13-3-0). Despite finishing under .500 for only the second season as a program, there will only be room to improve for the young Wildcat team.
Next week, ASU will look to find out if it qualified for ACHA Nationals, aiming to build on its familiar success in previous years.
