TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 12 Arizona State dropped only one set the entire dual Saturday, as the Sun Devils cruised to victory over Florida International.
Fresh off a 5-0 drubbing of Ottawa, Florida International beach volleyball (8-12) looked to carry that momentum into its match against Arizona State (16-9) Saturday, April 4, at Sun Devil Beach Volleyball Facility.
However, the Sun Devils delivered the Panthers a taste of their own medicine with a 5-0 win of their own.
ASU’s pair of seniors, Kendal Whitmarsh and Arden Besecker, defeated the FIU pairing of freshmen Elizabeth Nye and Lauren Coady by a score of 21-18, 21-15.
Another match featured the ASU duo of junior Olivia McElroy and senior Daniella Kensinger, who squeezed out a two-set victory 24-22, 22-20 over FIU’s junior Hanna Gubik and senior Nicole Robison.
The Sun Devils secured another match victory when graduate student Reagan Hope and sophomore Layla Williams defeated junior Nikelle Lander and sophomore Hailey Prodan in a 21-18, 21-14 match.
ASU’s seniors Ava Kirunchyk and Samaya Morin secured a 21-15, 21-14 victory over the Panthers’ senior Katarina Drozd and sophomore Brianna Luoma.
The match between the No. 3 pairs was the only three-set match of the morning, as the Sun Devils’ pair of senior McKenna Flaherty and junior Kristin Gilmour defeated FIU’s freshman Isabella Pereira and senior Kendra Brown.
The Panthers will take on Washington next Friday as part of the Boise State Beach Bash, while ASU will face California in the COE challenge next Friday after defeating Stetson later in the day Saturday.
