Mariah the Scientist pranks fans at April Fools concert in Phoenix

Mariah the Scientist brought her “Hearts Sold Separately" tour to the Arizona Financial Theatre in Phoenix on Tuesday, April 1.

Opening for Mariah were rising artists Akia and 4Batz. Akia’s vocals filled up the room, barely needing a backup track or any extravagancies to carry the vibrance in her voice. Akia sang a few of her songs about heartbreak and relationships and kept interacting with the crowd, asking them questions about their own relationships.

Half an hour  passed before the second opener arrived on stage. The lights suddenly went dark, and a montage appeared on the screen, with ocean imagery transitioning into images of 4batz and others. The backtrack music built up until 4batz, and his two female backup dancers took the stage.

The crowd seemed to enjoy the 4batz performance, especially his song with Drake, “act ii: date @ 8.” Many of the women in the audience occasionally yelled out “Where’s Anycia?!” referencing 4batz's wife, while he dances with his backup dancers.

Fans expected Mariah to start her set around 9 p.m., but she didn't begin until 9:50 p.m., possibly due to the setup of her April Fools' prank.

As Mariah first took the stage, she wore her signature army-green leather look, with her ginger curls covering her eyes and nose. Fans started speculating, though, when Mariah wasn’t moving her mouth, but they could still hear her singing. Confused murmurs traveled across the venue when a certain uproar started from the back corner of the room, where the real Mariah popped up in the middle of the audience. The woman on stage, dressed as her cousin, helped her pull an April Fool's prank on the audience.

The prank, perfectly timed, sent laughter and screams through the audience as Mariah teased, “Did y’all like the prank I pulled on you?”

After the real Mariah took the stage, her warm vocals were delivered as she sang her and Kali Uchis’ song “Is it a Crime?” Joining her on stage was Mariah’s band and two male backup dancers, all wearing the signature army green that encompassed this album tour.

About an hour into Mariah’s set, she asked the audience for song suggestions. She let the audience cheer for the options they wanted more, and the artist first picked her hit song “Brain.” After she sang a snippet of the song, the audience chose her song “Church” next, then “77 Degrees.”

After her set, Mariah stayed on stage and signed vinyls, photos, and CDs for fans in the crowd with the help of her bodyguards. Not many other artists would stay an extra 30 minutes just to talk to fans and sign merch. This level of interaction and kindness from Mariah is what keeps her fans' respect and love
