The weather in Providence, Rhode Island, on March 7th, 1948, was unusually cold. The day before had brought with it a nasty cold spell, with the low reaching a temperature of one degree Fahrenheit. Despite the cold, snow hadn’t fallen in nearly a week, leaving only a thin layer of ice to go along with the bitter freeze.
The 2023-2024 NBA season is right around the corner, and parity has its grip upon the entire league. Almost every team in the West seems to be intent on making the playoffs, creating one of the deepest conferences in a long time. With the rest of the teams chasing the defending champion Nuggets, here are the realistic hopes of each franchise, along with a player to watch for the season.

Most of the teams in the East have realistic playoff aspirations, with very few coming in expecting to struggle. In addition, there doesn’t seem to be any clear-cut favorite for the East representative in the Finals, even though there are many contenders. With that being said, here are the realistic hopes of each team, along with a player to watch in their 2023-2024 season.
In the day and age of social media and the peak of the player empowerment movement, trades and free agency have become as much of a spectacle in the NBA as the games themselves. However, trades in the NBA are often extremely confusing and convoluted. So, in an effort to increase the universal understanding of the recent Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday trades, and with many more disgruntled stars sure to be moved in the future, here’s a rundown of the mechanics and some of the key terms to understand for NBA trades.
Recently the NBA approved a new “Player Participation Policy.” This was to ensure that multiple “star” players weren’t being sat out due to “load management.” A player is deemed a “star” player by the NBA if they have been named to an All-NBA team or an All-Star team in the past three seasons. This is to promote more players to play the full 82-game season. Under the NBA’s new regulations, there are 49 current players that fall under the “star” category. Teams that violate this new policy will be fined $100,000 for their first offense, $250,000 for their second, and $1 million for any violation that continues. This is an issue that the NBA had been dealing with for years as many players were being sat out for various non-health related reasons.
The center position may have the most complex history of any position in the NBA, from utterly dominant, to obsolete, to revolutionary. It typically serves as the position of the biggest, tallest, or strongest player on the court. At the beginning, though there were big, tall, and strong players, this didn’t mean much. The players were still figuring out how exactly to play this newfangled game in an infant league, and weren’t exactly sure how to utilize the center position.
