PROVO, Utah — No. 7 Arizona State volleyball made the trip to Provo for a marquee Big 12 showdown with No. 19 BYU.
The Sun Devils came from behind to defeat the Cougars in front of a rowdy crowd at Smith Fieldhouse.
The match went down to the wire, but ASU prevailed in five sets.
The win sees the Sun Devils extend their Big 12 winning streak to 22 games, a run that dates all the way back to the team’s second conference game of last season.
However, that streak was in serious jeopardy tonight.
ASU had its back against the wall, trailing 22-20 in a must-win fourth set, but the squad clawed its way back to force a fifth set, in which they would stave off a late BYU comeback to win 15-13.
In the Sun Devils’ win, senior outside hitter Bailey Miller recorded her sixth double-double of the season—and her second consecutive—finishing the match with 16 kills and 14 digs.
Junior opposite hitter Noemie Glover bounced back from a slow start, earning 19 kills, including five in the decisive set, to go along with seven blocks.
In addition, graduate middle blocker Colby Neal, who leads the Big 12 in blocks per set, recorded a season-high 10 blocks in this game to go along with seven kills.
The Cougars, senior outside hitter Claire Little Chambers, and freshman outside hitter Suli Davis both recorded double-doubles.
Chambers had 14 kills and 10 digs in addition to four aces, while Davis recorded 25 kills, 11 digs, and two aces. Davis’ 25 kills mark the second-highest kill total in her career, helping BYU maintain control for the second and third sets of the match.
For the Sun Devils, the Big 12 dominance continues.
ASU maintained its position at the top of the standings, improving to 6-0 in the conference and 15-2 overall. Since joining the Big 12 last season.
The Sun Devils are an astounding 23-1 in conference play, and they have won all four matchups against the Cougars dating back to the 2023 season.
In the second round of the 2023 tournament, ASU walked into Provo and sent BYU home with a 3-0 sweep.
Last season, the teams met twice as Big 12 opponents, with the Sun Devils sweeping the Cougars in Tempe and coming back from 2-1 down in Provo to win.
BYU had an opportunity to change that narrative tonight, but the team once again failed to close out ASU with a 2-1 lead.
The Sun Devils have not only been in this situation before against the Cougars, but it has been there multiple times this season.
With the win, ASU is now 3-0 in five-set matches this season, coming back from a 2-1 deficit in all three of those wins, with all of them coming on the road.
The Sun Devils were on the ropes, but showed grit and determination in earning their third win over a ranked opponent in as many games.
