Moe Money: Odum Leads Arizona State to Comeback Win over Georgia State

TEMPE, Ariz. - After a sluggish 4-for-15 shooting night in his team’s loss to No. 19 Gonzaga on Friday, Arizona State senior guard Moe Odum decided to turn to the person who knows him best for advice.

“I just sat down and watched the film with my dad,” Odum said. “It just felt like I was taking too many threes, too many bad shots, and forcing the game.”

So, on Monday night at Desert Financial Arena against Georgia State, Odum came out and found the shots he — and his dad — was looking for.

Odum shot 10-for-19 from the field and 2-for-5 on three-pointers, finishing with 24 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals and leading ASU to a come-from-behind 75-62 victory over the Panthers on Monday night at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe.

Alongside Odum, freshman center Massamba Diop picked up his first double-double of the campaign, tallying 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Diop scored two huge buckets on back-to-back possessions — both of which were assisted by Odum — to seal the Sun Devils' victory.

ASU overcame an 11-point second-half deficit by going on a 20-1 run over a five-minute span and rejuvenating a previously stagnant crowd at Desert Financial Arena.

The sparks that ignited the comeback came off the bench for the Sun Devils in the form of senior guard Anthony “Pig” Johnson, who finished with 13 points and shot 5-for-6 from the field, and sophomore guard Noah Meeusen, who made his season debut on Monday after missing the first three games of the season dealing with an ankle injury.

“I thought what Noah and Pig did in that stretch defensively…turned the game around for us,” ASU Head Coach Bobby Hurley said.

Johnson, in particular, had a strong individual stretch that served as a turning point in the second half, turning two steals into electrifying transition dunks on the other end that got the crowd back into the game after a slow start to the second half.

On the other hand, Meeusen was never able to find his groove on the offensive side of the ball, as he missed his two field goal attempts, both of which came from behind the arc. The struggles from long range were a trend for the Sun Devils on Monday, as ASU finished 4-for-19 on 3-pointers.

In contrast, Georgia State built its lead by getting hot from distance, drilling nine of its first 15 three-point attempts and frustrating Hurley and his staff.

“We had some bad, soft closeouts,” Hurley said, “and we let them get comfortable hitting threes…I don’t think we did a good job in that regard.”

However, the defensive intensity of the Sun Devils during the pivotal run caused the Panthers to go cold down the stretch, as Georgia State missed 10 straight threes to end the game and were held without a field goal for the final six minutes and 24 seconds.

On top of that, the Panthers were without their leading scorer on Monday. Sophomore guard Jelani Hamilton, who averaged a team-high 14.7 points in Georgia State's first three games, missed his second straight game due to injury.

For the Panthers, junior guard Malachi Brown poured in 15 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while sophomore guard Jakai Newton and freshman guard Micah Tucker both finished with 11 points for Georgia State.

Although the unexpectedly close battle on Monday may have been draining for Hurley’s squad, ASU doesn’t have much time to regroup. The team boards a plane bright and early tomorrow morning for the islands of Hawaii.

The Sun Devils take on Hawaii in Honolulu for their first road game of the campaign, on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Rainbow Warriors are off to a strong 4-1 start to the season, with the loss coming in a 60-59 nail-biter at Oregon.

Despite the scare, Odum believes that Monday can be very valuable in the long run for the Sun Devils.

“We underestimated Georgia State and almost got our heads blown off,” Odum said. “We can’t underestimate [Hawaii] and I hope it’s a lesson for my teammates to never underestimate anybody.”
