TEMPE, Ariz.– The physicality and offensive pressure of the University of Utah was too much for Arizona State University to handle, as the Utes escaped winning 5-4.
Utah came out early, continually dumping the puck into the ASU defensive zone, applying pressure on goalie Hayden Manning.
Both teams did a great job applying pressure early, with very little neutral zone play between the two teams.
Both teams played with a lot of physicality from the initial faceoff.
“I was just playing with that grit and that extra edge,” Utahs forward Joseph Crowley said regarding the teams’ physicality.
Utes forward Erik Gibboney committed a hooking penalty, which set ASU up for the power play opportunity.
Sun Devils forward Caden Butler made sure to capitalize after a series of great passes from defender Ty Merchant and forward Carter Newlin led to an easy power play goal with 13:55 left in the first period.
Utah continued to apply relentless pressure, despite trailing with 9:14 left in the first, the Utes had 10 shots on goal compared to ASU’s three.
Utah answered back with its own goal after they won a faceoff, and defender Matthew Delaney instantly got a pass from forward Ethan Fletcher, catching ASU goalie Manning off guard.
Utah winger Nikolas Schwab had a cheap shot at ASU right winger Ryan Quast after the whistle. Schwab got himself a roughing penalty for his actions.
ASU’s Merchant came to defend his teammate and got himself an unsportsmanlike conduct call of his own.
Utah's Delaney grabbed ASU defender Jake King's mask right before the end of the first period to give ASU a power play to start the second.
The Utes took the lead with 2:52 into the second after constant pressure on the ASU goalie led the Utes Forward Erik Gibboney with a great opportunity to score.
The Sun Devils tied it up with a second score after Merchant made a pass through Utes winger Paul Wauldhauser’s legs to Merchant's teammate, forward Carson Kuche, with 11:20 left in the second.
ASU regained the lead just 10 seconds later after a faceoff win turned into an easy score for defender Brennan Cazel on the left wing.
Less than a minute later, ASU forward No. 13 Tyler Kiley Ram had a breakaway look and found his teammate, forward No.2 Conner Squeri, who found the back of the net with 10:33 remaining.
The Utah defender Jake Laurila’s shot bounced off the ASU goalie, and Laurila's teammate, forward Joseph Crowley, got the easy ricochet tap-in with 8:20 left in the second.
The Utes again applied constant pressure, and with 7:18 left in the period, forward Trevor Krusck eventually found the gap after a series of good passes from teammates Gibboney and Schwab.
The Sun Devils had a 5-on-3 opportunity to end the second period after the Utes’ Laurila and Schwab had to share the penalty box after a couple of penalties.
The Utes mitigated damage with some great spacing to not let ASU get anything past them to go into the third tied.
The third period had six power plays between the two teams, but no scores during them. Both teams did a good job handling the pressure of being down a man.
After an ASU defender got hit hard, Utah's Gibboney snuck a goal past the Sun Devils goalie with a pass from teammate, defender Coltin Johnson, that would eventually become the game-winning goal.
