Alex Anthony Madrid Faces Death Penalty

PHOENIX – Alex Anthony Madrid has been officially charged with murder, sexual conduct with a minor and kidnapping. He is now fighting the death penalty. Alex Anthony Madrid faces the death penalty after being convicted of the 2013 rape and murder of Claudia Ann Lucero, a 14-year-old girl whose body was discovered wrapped in a carpet near a Phoenix dumpster. Madrid was found guilty earlier this month, with DNA evidence linking him to the crime. In a bid to spare his life, his family members have testified in Maricopa Superior Court, describing a turbulent family history, his efforts to connect with his son and difficult childhood experiences. The penalty phase of his trial will continue into early 2025. Alex Anthony Madrid, 42, was arrested in 2013 for the rape and murder of Lucero ,14. Upon being broken up with by Lucero’s mother, Madrid kidnaped Lucero, raped her by a dumpster and then strangled her to death. He then wrapped her body in an old carpet where it was discovered by two women looking for aluminum cans.

Citizens of Phoenix Urge City Council to Defund Police

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Police Department and Phoenix City Council continue to face ongoing criticism from citizens regarding the police department’s use of excessive force and allegations of discrimination. The Department of Justice announced its investigation into the Phoenix Police Department on Aug. 5, 2021, and completed a report in 34 months regarding the allegations of civil rights violations such as racial discrimination and violation of First Amendment rights. The DOJ found that the allegations were true and the Phoenix Police Department had engaged in behavior that violates the U.S. Constitution and federal law, according to the DOJ website The Phoenix City Council met on Sept. 24 to discuss the implementation of policies regarding public safety concerns. These policies were set to give the police increased funding for reformation. Speakers such as Mardi Winkler and Shawanna Chambers El shared their personal experiences with the Phoenix Police Department and the justice system, calling for defunding. Other speakers, such as Anna Hernandez, criticized how long it has taken for Phoenix’s City Council to address the police department’s threat to public safety.
