The first weekend of the 2023 Phoenix Film Festival featured filmmakers from across the country collaborating under Phoenix’s brightest lights. Big names included Anna Camp, Olga Merediz, Michael J. Fox, and Ben Proudfoot.
Points of high tension, longing and drama through various desires in life can cause a meltdown of emotions from built-up stress. At one point or another, everybody wished they could wash away all their problems, even for just a moment of serenity. Kelela’s “Raven” contrasts the depths of emotion with the depths of an ocean and finds herself reborn as someone freer and stronger.
The “Rage Room” experience finally landed in downtown Phoenix, after three months of waiting, on March 4 as a sold-out show at the Van Buren. The performers and crowd competed to match each other’s energy throughout the whole event.
TV Messages, The Fiends, and Miserable Ghost played at Trunk Space on February 11th, 2023. Trunk Space is a non-profit, all-ages venue located in Grace Lutheran Church, in Downtown Phoenix. TV Messages is a Phoenix-based band consisting of lead vocalist and guitarist Kaili Orcutt, bassist Tanner Bontrager, guitarist Pablo Cruz, and drummer Scott Kelston. Their music can be described as dreamy pop-rock. The Fiends and Miserable Ghost are both hardcore punk bands.
Tempe’s Innings Festival naturally has big shoes to fill — dynamic headliners like last year’s Foo Fighters and appearances from esteemed baseball players are expected to draw in crowds that encapture the overlapping section of a sports buff and music fan Venn diagram. By the looks of it, 2023’s festival weekend seemed like it surpassed last year’s attendance numbers dramatically, but during a Saturday speckled with irritating wind gusts and sound issues, the crowds only made the satisfactory lineup harder to get through.
The 95th Academy Awards aired Sunday, March 12, 2023, and there’s a lot to discuss from the winners, losers, musical performances and the occasional Hollywood drama viewers have now come to expect. It would be nearly impossible to cover every single thing that went down, because as we all know, the Oscars always has its fair share of upsets, disappointments, and even slaps. But in this piece, I hope I cover the moments that were collectively seen as the most important.
The 95th Academy Awards was one for the books, as countless film industry professionals were recognized for their work in 2022. While the Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night, The Oscars serve as a red carpet lookbook featuring some of the film industry’s most prominent names. This year’s winners took center stage in classic, high-end outfits. Here’s an overview of some of the biggest winners of the night.
Nascar closed its three-week west coast swing with its annual visit to Phoenix Raceway. The Craftsman Trucks series was off this week and was replaced with the ARCA Menards series.
Arizona State University has been ranked a top public university by international students for a second consecutive year after the university has seen a dramatic increase in the population of international students.
This past weekend the McDowell Mountain Music Festival (M3F) staged their annual event at Margaret T. Hance Park on March 3 and 4.
McDowell Moutain Music Festival, more commonly known as M3F, rocked the Valley last weekend. The music festival sponsors arts, community, education and environment in the Phoenix area; 100% of every ticket goes to charity, and since its inception over $4.4 million has been donated.
The 95th Academy Awards are just around the corner, which means Oscar predictions are back. Critics attempt to figure out the winners based on a multitude of factors. In recent years, films that would be referred to as “Oscar bait” have not won in the categories where they were favored. Independent, lower budget films, however, have been gaining success at The Oscars in recent years, for example last year’s Best Picture winner “CODA,” and the 89th Academy Awards Best Picture winner “Moonlight.” Instead of trying my hand at predicting who will win, I instead chose to write about my favorite movies in each category and why I believe they deserve to win their respective awards. Fair warning, I have not seen every movie in every category, so my opinions are based only on the films I have seen. With that, here are the largest award categories and my favorites.
A new restaurant, bar, and shopping area combination is coming to downtown Phoenix. Latha, which means “flavor,” gives customers the experience of African, Brazilian, and Caribbean cultures through food, drinks, music, and art.
By the time you’re reading this, it might already be the best month of the year…March. Conference tournaments are now officially underway and the fantastic event of March Madness is upon us (I am one who refers to March Madness as being the conference tournaments as well as the Big Dance). With this current week being the last official week of the regular season, this article will be the penultimate one of this series. Have no fear though, we have a new piece coming to you once the NCAA Tournament starts (hint: I will be helping you win bracket pools). There was plenty to digest from this past week, so let’s get right into it.
It was a chillier day on Sunday for Innings Fest after a warm and sunny Saturday that featured the likes of Green Day and Weezer. Fans showed up with baseball jerseys over their sweatshirts and thick jackets to enjoy music from Paris Jackson, Marcus Mumford and the headliner Eddie Vedder.
The 2022-23 NFL season ended with a massive bang: Eagles and Chiefs Super Bowl. While a lot of fans around the league wanted a Bills-Eagles Super Bowl, the Chiefs proved to be too resilient for the Birds. Despite the loss, Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts has developed into the most underrated star in the league.
With the spring fast approaching, Arizona State baseball gears up for another season competing at the Division 1 level. So far this pre-season, they have failed to make the NCAA’s Top 50 composite-ranked college baseball teams. The program did receive votes to be among the other top programs, but their vote count was too low to make the rankings list, meaning they are on the outside looking in. ASU has a long, rich history of successful baseball teams and standout players; however, it seems this season they need to make a resurgent statement in the college baseball scene.
The state of the NHL has never been more controversial, and this season’s All-Star festivities are no exception. After a weekend of lackluster events, culminating in the traditional All-Star Game, NHL fans have taken to the internet to voice their frustrations with the league and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.
The McDowell Mountain Music Festival (M3F) is returning to Margaret T. Hance Park in Phoenix on March 3-4, 2023. This is the festival’s second consecutive year, after being canceled in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Another week has passed, meaning we are even closer to Selection Sunday and the start of the Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament. With that each game seems more and more important as teams jockey for position. It was an odd week in college basketball with not a ton of movement in the AP Poll as a lot of teams countered a big win with an equally as big of a loss (Maryland, Indiana, Tennessee). But fear not, our team of experts (me) sifted tirelessly through box scores and came out with a definite list of the week’s biggest winners and losers. So without further ado, here they are:
