Blaze Radio achievements in 2022/23

2022/23 was a defining year for Blaze Radio. Here are the list of milestones.

The 2022/23 academic year was groundbreaking for Blaze Radio.

After celebrating 40 years of radio work, in October 2022 Blaze Radio was voted the No. 1 College Radio Station in the Country by The Princeton Review.

With over 200 active members, Blaze Radio is ASU’s largest student-led organization behind Greek life.

Blaze Radio had nine nominations at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards in February 2023, of which the station took home three awards.

As the academic year comes to a close, Blaze Radio and its members celebrate the club’s achievements and are excited to work toward another successful year in 2023/24.

Here’s a list of Blaze Radio’s accomplishments within each department, as well as a list of the 2022/23 Board of Directors and incoming 2023/24 Board of Directors.

Production accomplishments

  • Blaze 40th Anniversary Documentary nominated for an IBS award 

  • Partnership with Album Listening Club at ASU to create the “For The Record” playlist

  • Partnership with The Chic Daily to create the “Off The Runway” playlist

  • Created a “Women Who Rock” playlist in honor of Women’s History Month

  • Created multiple sweepers

  • Got a station ID from Del Water Gap

  • Started the Blaze Radio Newsletter

  • Created an anniversary sticker

  • Rolled out Blaze Radio’s Discord channel

Programming accomplishments

  • 70 specialty show applications in fall 2022

  • Record 73 specialty show applications in spring 2023

  • 99 hours of weekly Blaze programming in spring 2023

Sports Department accomplishments

  • Department Director Mallory Schnell named Undergraduate Student Leader of the Year 2022/23 of the downtown campus

  • Partnership with Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers restaurant for weekly live shows at the Jefferson St. location

  • Broadcasted daily live shows at Super Bowl LVII’s Radio Row in February

  • Interviewed ASU alum and Masters Champion Jon Rahm at the WM Phoenix Open in Feburary 2023 

  • Interviewed Phoenix Mercury Head Coach Vanessa Nygaard in December 2022

  • Live-broadcasted the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl in Glendale in December 2022

  • Live-broadcasted the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix in December 2022

  • Live-broadcasted the ASU vs Nevada First Four men’s basketball game in Dayton, Ohio, in March 2023

  • Live-broadcasted the ASU vs Texas Christian University First Round men’s basketball game in Denver, Colorado, in March 2023

  • Live-broadcasted the Pac-12 Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments in Las Vegas, Nevada, in March 2023

  • Live-broadcasted seven specialty shows from the Waste Management Phoenix Open 2023

  • 34 weekly specialty shows in spring 2023

Music Department accomplishments

  • Partnership with The Van Buren concert venue in Phoenix for giveaways and event coverage

  • Coverage of Innings Festival 2023, M3F Festival 2023, ZONA Music Festival 2022 and DUSK Music Festival 2022

  • Coverage of Yung Gravy’s and bbno$’s “baby gravy” tour concert 2022

  • Promotional giveaways for Gem & Jam Festival 2023, Soccer Mommy’s “Touring, Forever” concert 2022, Charley Crockett’s “The Man from Waco” concert 2022, State Champs’ “Kings of the New Age” concert 2022, “One More Time: A Tribute to Daft Punk” concert 2022, Rina Sawayama’s “Hold the Girl” concert 2022, Beabadoobee’s “Beatopia” concert 2022, Ali Gatie’s “Who Hurt You?” concert 2022, Maneskin’s “Loud Kids Tour Gets Louder” concert 2022 and Same Same But Different Festival 2022

  • Partnership with Album Listening Club at ASU for Danny Brown concert 2023

News Department accomplishments

  • Live coverage of 2022 US Elections on November 8, 2022 from 3 p.m. until midnight

  • Covered each of Arizona’s General Election Debates in November 2022

  • Coverage of the Phoenix Film Festival 2023

  • Created new logos for Press Pass and Traffic Jam, the Department’s two staple shows

  • Record number 19 specialty show submissions in spring 2023

  • Record number 32 articles published online

  • Interviews from names including Marc Victor, Olga Merediz, Edward Worthy, Helen Maroulis, Jason Carney, and Dave Franco

  • Expanded department to over 90 people

Website accomplishments

  • New and revamped website launched in October 2022 with new layout, play button, graphics, menus and design
