Our Staff Writers' Predictions for Arizona State Football's 2025 Season
Record: 9-3
"Expectations have never been higher for Arizona State Football following a stellar breakout campaign for head coach Kenny Dillingham's Sun Devils, a season in which ASU only lost two games throughout the regular season en route to a Big 12 championship during its inaugural season in the conference. Despite the lofty expectations, I have Arizona State regressing slightly, picking up an additional loss, going 9-3 in the regular season. Both of the Sun Devils' regular-season losses in 2024 occurred on the road, which is an issue I see persisting into this season, especially when it comes to playing in potentially colder environments such as Colorado or Iowa. I believe those factors, along with the Big 12 getting stronger as a whole, will lead the Sun Devils to dropping close games against Baylor, Utah and Iowa State." — Zach Dworaczyk

"After a Cinderella 10-2 regular season and run to the College Football Playoff, I expect Arizona State to slightly regress this upcoming season. The loss of star running back Cam Skattebo sticks out, yet the improvement from the Big 12 as a whole poses a greater threat to the Sun Devils repeating as conference champs. Fourth-and-13 looms in the heads of all ASU fans, but 2025 should still offer an excellent chance for redemption. With the duo of redshirt sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt and junior wide receiver Jordyn Tyson (projected First-Team All-American by USA Today) returning, the Sun Devils' offense should produce at a high level. My prediction is 9-3 with losses to Iowa State, Baylor and an unexpected upset thrown in." — Wyatt Baumeyer.

"The last time Arizona State appeared in the AP Preseason Top 25 was in 2021; before that, it hadn't happened since 1998. Needless to say, the Sun Devils aren’t used to the national spotlight or entering the season as favorites. An underdog mentality and the daily heroics of running back Cameron Skattebo largely fueled last year’s success. However, this season feels different. I believe Arizona State will finish with a 10-2 record, shifting slightly away from a run-heavy offense in favor of a more spread-oriented scheme. Sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt is already generating buzz, landing on early Heisman Watch Lists and First-Team All-American projections. The Sun Devils will go undefeated at home for the second straight year, yet will suffer two road losses, one in Waco, Texas, against Baylor and another in Ames, Iowa, against Iowa State." --- Taylor Gautney

"Arizona State didn’t regress; the rest of the Big 12 improved. Texas Tech reloaded with the nation’s second-best transfer class, trailing only Louisiana State, Texas Christian bolstered its defense and Baylor its offense with some of the best recruiting hauls in the conference, according to 247 Sports. The Big 12 boasts some of the most significant parity of any Power Four conference. The upside for ASU is clear: led by sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt and junior wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, arguably the best QB-WR duo in the Big 12, if not the country, the Sun Devils have a realistic chance at a second consecutive conference title and playoff berth. Still, a competitive schedule means close games are nearly inevitable, a hallmark under head coach Kenny Dillingham in 2024. Of their 13 games last season, eight were decided by eight or fewer points. ASU narrowly escaped against Texas State (31-28), Brigham Young (28-23) and Kansas State (24-14) despite suspect late time management and play calling. The Big 12 is also loaded with talented quarterbacks and with Arizona State returning the same defensive line that posted the second-worst pressure rate in the Power Four last season (25.5%), according to PFF, opposing signal-callers could exploit the unit. That being said, ASU’s star-studded roster featuring a diverse offense and experienced defense will make for another fun season in the Valley of the Sun." — Nate Mills

"Arizona State is going to suffer from a brutal road schedule. Winning all three of Baylor, Utah, and Iowa State would be an impressive feat, not to mention the extra game against potential Big 12 favorite Texas Tech and their incredible transfer class. Health is the only thing that can get in the way of this team winning the Big 12 and reaching the playoff. The offense couldn’t get anything going in Cincinnati when Leavitt was dealing with an injury, and many argue that the Sun Devils would have won the Peach Bowl if Jordyn Tyson was active. Mostly healthy, this team could go 12-0, but they are a bad injury or two away from going 6-6." --- Nickolas Montei

"For many years, the Arizona State football program has been viewed as a sleeping giant in college football, just waiting for the right coach to wake it up. Head Coach Kenny Dillingham, in his second season at the helm of the football program, led the Sun Devils to an 11-3 record, including a Big 12 Championship and a playoff birth. The Sun Devils are returning 79 percent of their starters from last season as sophomore quarterback Sam Leavitt enters the Heisman Award conversation. Leavitt and ASU will pick back up right where they left off last year by going undefeated at home and seeing defeat only once on the road against Utah, landing back in the Big 12 Championship game." — Nick Furman

"At the heart of Arizona State’s ascension to power last season was its ability to fly under the radar, sustained by its eventual emergence in the AP ranks in Week 13. In 2025, the Sun Devils will not have that luxury. The pressure exerted by the media and ASU’s long-standing preseason ranking curse will either create diamonds or bring this team to its knees. Fortunately, I believe the latter to be more unlikely, as head coach Kenny Dillingham has taught his team to go beyond silly superstitions and embrace the target placed on their backs. The Big-12 will do no favors for Arizona State, but that wasn’t a problem last year, and it certainly won’t be this year."— Nate Johnson.
