“Frozen” at The Phoenix Theatre Company melts viewers hearts

“Frozen” is now taking the stage at The Phoenix Theatre Company. The popular musical opened on Sept. 24 in a packed theatre and will be ending its run on Oct. 26, 2025. This production is the first being shown in the brand new Dr. Stacie J. and Richard J Stephenson Theatre, providing a cozy, modern environment for all ticket holders.

The show started at 7 p.m., with the doors opening 30 minutes prior. This theatre also offers a few matinee showings of “Frozen” as well for the convenience of viewers.

The film “Frozen” aired for the first time in 2013, immediately capturing the attention of audiences globally. The story explores the loving relationship between two royal sisters, Elsa and Anna. Elsa brings magic to the screen with her impressive snow powers, while the film itself consists of plot twists, catchy songs, and enticing love stories.

The Disney musical delivers the same message, adding originality and a theatrical take on the movie. Iconic songs like “Let It Go” and “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” are performed, in addition to more acts from the musical's Broadway script. Whether you are a theatre lover or a rookie, this musical is for you.

While the show started with some technical difficulties due to the new theatre's sound system, the cast and crew quickly recovered and put on a great show. Caelan Creaser, who played Elsa, blew the crowd away with her incredible vocal range and clean costume changes. Alongside Creaser is Chelsea Cree Groen, who plays her younger sister Anna. Chelsea brings a comedic energy to the stage, generating roars of laughter from the crowd, as well as delivering powerhouse vocals. Together, the pair puts on a well-rounded performance, and does an incredible job expressing the emotional relationship between these two sisters.

The Phoenix Theatres Company's rendition of “Frozen” did a great job at highlighting popular songs from the musical. A few minutes into the show, “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” was performed by Kali Kappes, who was an adorable young Anna. Soon after that act was “Dangerous to Dream”, which featured Creaser's strong voice and flawless tone. Throughout the night, other well liked songs were performed, such as “Love is an Open Door” featuring Brandon S Chu as Hans, and of course, the one and only, “Let It Go” performed by Elsa.

In addition to the lead roles, other amusing characters stole the audience's attention. Joseph Paul Cavazos voiced Olaf, the talking snowman, while taking control of the complex, lifesize puppet that embodied the character in the film. Although he wasn't the only puppet present on stage, Sven, played by Jacody Weathers, also had to manage a puppet the size of him.

They both brought a lighthearted, witty, liveliness to the stage, captivating children all around the theatre. Other cast members in the ensemble like Dani Cleveland and Kambria Cook, brought talent to the stage with their advanced dance skills, harmonization, and outstanding facial expressions.

On another note, the costume design in “Frozen” plays a very important role in the making of the musical. Right before intermission hit, Elsa sang her well-known solo, “Let It Go”. During this performance, Elsa’s coronation dress and velvet magenta cape were magically removed, revealing a beautiful sparkly blue dress. Numerous other costumes stood out, such as the ensemble’s fluffy robes and striped towels during their performance of “Hygge.”

Set design is vital to the success of a theatrical performance as well. This musical displays a simple yet captivating set for all spectators. The iced powder blue walls and chilling fog coming from the smoke machines brought out the idea of a cold winter. Although we never truly get all four seasons here in Arizona, this set design makes it feel as though it's getting “Colder by the Minute.”

None of this would have been possible without the Director Michael Barnard, the Producing Artistic Director of The Phoenix Theater Company. Along with the design teams, the band and creative teams, Barnard really helped bring “Frozen” to life on stage.

With memorable performances from cast members, well thought-out acting choices and stunning designs, this musical is worth watching.
