Arizona State Basketball Introduces Teams in Moonlit Madness

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State’s basketball teams welcomed fans with a showdown of events to get the season started.

To start the night off, former Sun Devils player Kyle Dodd introduced the players from each of the respective teams' rosters. Dodd also introduced both coaches, including women’s head coach Molly Miller and men’s head coach Bobby Hurley.

Fans provided a warm welcome to the coaches and the players, while the players provided towels that fans took home.

The first event of the night was a classic knockout game. Four women from the women’s team and four men from the men’s team got in line to eliminate the competition.

After a streak of consecutive makes, fifth-year guard Last-Tear Poa ended up taking the win in the knockout competition.

Going into the next event, a three-point competition between two teams had some exciting moments. This includes a nail-biting regular competition that ended in a draw.

This called for sudden death, which Team One ultimately won.

Throughout the entirety of the event, ASU’s mascot Sparky went around the court hyping the fans up. Sparky also went down to the fan section and took some pictures with the Sun Devils’ students and fans.

To close off the night, four players from the men’s team took part in a slam dunk contest. The contents were sophomore guard Trevor Best, freshman center Mor Massamba Diop, senior guard Anthony “Pig” Johnson and junior forward Vijay Wallace.

Throughout the night, Trevor Best was the fan favorite, receiving multiple standing ovations after dunks, making baskets and engaging in dialogue with the crowd.

“Am I the fan favorite, guys?” Best said.

In the first round of the dunk contest, the standout dunkers from the round included Johnson with an impressive dunk, jumping over one of his teammates, and Massamba Diop with an off-the-backboard lob to himself. Both of these players advanced to the next round.

In the second and final round of the dunk contest, Massamba Diop pulled off arguably the most impressive dunk of the night. Massamba Diop threw a similar lob, looking like the same dunk he did before, but instead, he tapped the front of the rim before throwing the dunk down with some authority.

“I don’t know if you guys saw that, but he didn’t just catch a lob off the backboard; he tapped the front of the rim before finishing off the dunk,” Dodd said. “You do not know how hard that is to do.”

The dunk rightfully got a score of 10.

Johnson looked to one-up his teammates and top his previous dunk that he had during the first round of the competition. However, things went south quickly.

Johnson failed at converting his original dunk attempt and resorted to a simpler dunk as the time on the clock quickly expired. This led to Johnson being unable to match his teammates’ score of 10.

The final dunk of the night provided some creativity in the mix. Massamba Diop brought out Coach Hurley to throw him a lob off the backboard.

As Coach Hurley came onto the court, the two began discussing where Massamba Diop wanted the ball and how high Hurley needed to throw it.

In the end, Massamba Diop converted the dunk on his first try, crowning him as the Moonlit Madness 2025 slam dunk contest winner.

“We have a new group of unique players, who give it their all in practice every day,” Hurley said. “See you all at DFA.”
