Arizona State’s relentless offense leads to dominant win over Central Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. — In its third exhibition game of the season, Arizona State softball continued to show its potential with great baserunning, powerful hitting and pitching.

On Oct. 22, Farrington Stadium witnessed two home runs, double-digit strikeouts and aggressive baserunning in a Sun Devils’ 11-0 victory over Central Arizona College.

In just a seven-inning game, ASU scored in all but the second inning, showcasing the offense’s relentless approach. The Sun Devils scored multiple runs in three innings, with 5 of the 11 runs scored coming off two home runs.

The first home run of the night came in the third inning off the bat of sophomore outfielder Ashleigh Mejia after a double to left center from junior catcher/utility Samantha Swan and a bunt single by senior outfielder Kaylee Pond.

Mejia stepped up to the plate and drove a ball over the right field fence for a three-run home run to put ASU up 4-0 after three.

The second homer of the night came in the fifth inning off the bat of junior infielder Ryan Brown to dead center field to extend the lead to 8-0 after Mejia got her second hit of the night with a single up the middle. Brown pinch-hit for junior infielder Katie Chester.

The hitting by the Sun Devils wasn’t the only thing that was powerful tonight, as their pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts in tonight's game.

Junior pitcher Meika Lauppe started for ASU and threw three shutout innings striking out seven batters.

In the fourth inning, the Sun Devils brought in Senior pitcher Aissa Silva. Silva would almost match Lauppe’s performance by going three shutout innings as well and striking out five.

In the seventh inning, freshman pitcher Mary Peyton Hodge slammed the door.

However, you can’t have a tremendous overall performance without great baserunning.

ASU took advantage of any chance it got to advance on the bases.

The constant taking an extra base on base hits hit to the outfield, or even when the ball stayed in the infield, the Sun Devils went the extra mile on a slow Central Arizona defense.

ASU continues its exhibition play next week against Embry-Riddle.
