OPINION: Colleen Hoover's "Regretting You"

SPOILER WARNING

The new movie “Regretting You” is coming to theatres this Friday. This film is an adaptation of the well-liked novel written by Colleen Hoover, and explores the ideas of heartbreak and romance while displaying a shocking turn of events.

“Regretting You” relays a powerful message: to live with no regrets. Whilst worlds are being turned upside down, the story shows that instead of dwelling on the past, discovering a passion is more valuable. Navigating grief, complex relationships and tragedy can be difficult, but this picture shows how love is above all.

This film encompasses the sweet love story between Clara Grant (Mckenna Grace) and Miller Adams (Mason Thames). These two characters both share similar interests in film and ultimately share a strong interest for each other. Both Grace and Thames prove to have strong acting skills and bring an emotional, captivating performance to the table. The actors insane chemistry has even sparked rumors they are dating in real life

Grace was asked in a recent interview by “Access Hollywood” if this was her “hard launch” to which she replied, “My hard launch? This movie? Yeah it's definitely Miller and Clara’s,” then proceeds to wink implying otherwise.

While the movie explores Clara and Miller's love story, a change of circumstances takes place, and family dramas entangle. Fans of intriguing rom-coms are sure to enjoy this movie.

Other notable characters are Clara’s parents, Morgan Grant (Allison Williams) and Chris Grant (Scott Eastwood). Morgan, being Clara’s mom, shares a powerful relationship with her daughter, with their relationship progressively becoming more complicated throughout the story. Clara, being freshly 17, wants to rebel from her overprotective mom, and in doing so, the pair has to overcome obstacles together. Chris, on the other hand, is an important character who becomes a key element later on in the story once an appalling betrayal is revealed.

Morgan’s sister, Jenny Davidson (Willa Fitzgerald) shares a special relationship with her niece Clara, as well as her sister. Throughout the film, Clara goes to her aunt for advice rather than her mother, since her mom has a very wary energy. Morgan is extremely protective of her only child and cautious of the world around her, therefore Clara finds comfort in advice from her aunt. Jonah Sullivan (Dave Franco) is Jenny’s boyfriend, who is a bit of a mysterious character but plays a very influential role in the film.

Key characters aside, important concepts are addressed throughout the movie as well. Although love and heartbreak are the advertised main ideas of the film, this movie also represents coming of age. Predominantly, Clara has to learn how to navigate her first love while also finding her own identity as a person. This film reflects on many challenges that young adults experience, making this film a beneficial watch for teenagers and even those going through struggles.

Colleen Hoover is the author of the novel “Regretting You” and happens to be the executive producer of the film as well. Likewise, Hoover was an executive producer for the movie “It Ends With Us”, which is an adaptation of her bestselling novel. However, ”It Ends With Us” was anticipated by viewers in all the wrong ways, making scandalous headlines. Alternatively, “Regretting You” has had a great press run, and audiences are looking forward to the film. The cast of “Regretting You” provides a lightheartedness that previous films produced by Hoover just don’t have.

This film is definitely a tear jerker, which adds to an already good story.
