No. 6 Arizona State Defeats No. 13 TCU in Four Sets, Extends Win Streak to 12

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State volleyball continued its dominance in the Big 12 on Wednesday night, extending its win streak to 12 matches with a four-set victory over No. 13 TCU at Desert Financial Arena.

The Sun Devils improved to 18-2 overall and 9-0 in Big 12 play, maintaining their position at the top of the conference standings. The win also marked ASU’s 25th consecutive conference victory, a streak dating back to last season.

With a raucous home crowd fueling their play, the Sun Devils took the match 3–1 (25–11, 22–25, 25–13, 25–17). Head Coach JJ Van Niel credited the home crowd for his team’s stellar performance.

“Our team loves playing in front of them,” Van Niel said. “One of the things I was excited about when I took this opportunity was DFA, because I think about the environment here. I don’t know if it’s because it’s old and there’s cement, but it’s loud.”

Arizona State used a well-distributed offensive effort to overwhelm TCU. Junior opposite hitter Noemie Glover and senior outside hitter Bailey Miller each recorded 11 kills, while graduate middle blocker Colby Neal and redshirt freshman outside hitter Kiylah Presley added nine apiece.

“It’s huge if we can be balanced on our offense,” Van Niel said. “I think any coach would tell you they don’t like having to rely on 25 kills a night from one player. It’s great if you have it, but when you can spread it around, it just makes it hard for the other team.”

Senior setter Sydney Henry set up her team, tallying 23 assists on the night, while sophomore libero Faith Frame had 13 digs.

The Sun Devils came out firing in the first set, building a 16–8 lead. TCU burned both of its timeouts early but couldn’t slow the momentum, as ASU closed the set on an 8–1 run to win 25–11.

Set two was the only frame the Horned Frogs managed to secure. Behind steady hitting from sophomore outside hitter Evan Hendrix and junior outside hitter Lauren Murphy, TCU held off ASU to win 25–22.

“They got out to a little lead, and we were trying to press,” Van Niel said. “I talk to them [the team] all the time about how you can’t win a match in one swing or one serve. You’ve just got to be consistent over and over and over again. We were pressing a little bit, and I think in the other two sets, they just came out and executed.”

After regrouping between sets, ASU rediscovered its rhythm. The Sun Devils jumped to a 10–2 lead in the third set, fueled by Glover and Miller at the net.

A service error from TCU freshman outside hitter Samara Coleman ended the third set, 25–13, giving ASU a 2–1 advantage.

The fourth set was more of the same, as ASU’s balanced attack kept the Horned Frogs from generating sustained runs. Despite TCU's efforts to close the gap, a final kill by Presley sealed the 25–17 set and secured the match.

The victory marked Arizona State’s fifth win over a ranked opponent this season, showing its place among the nation’s elite.

“I think our goal is to treat every opponent the same,” Neal said. “The Big 12 is crazy this year, everybody’s upsetting everybody all the time. We’re just trying to put ourselves in the best position to be seeded for the tournament.”

Frame echoed that mindset, saying ASU’s challenging schedule will only help as the postseason approaches.

“I think it’s really good that we’re playing such good teams right now,” Frame said. “It’s preparing us for the postseason and the tournament later on. Playing these good teams now is preparing us, and it’s been really fun.”
