No. 8 Quinnipiac defeats Notre Dame in day two of the Ice Breaker Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - Coming off a game where it was upset by the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks, No. 8 Quinnipac Bobcats looked to bounce back.

On day two of the Ice Breaker Tournament at Mullet Arena, the Bobcats defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a 7-2 rout, showcasing their offensive power with six players scoring at least one goal in the game.

First-year forward Antonin Verreault scored two goals for Quinnipiac.

The Bobcats racked up 38 total shots on the day and were one for six on the power play. The first four of those power play attempts came within the first two minutes of the game.

For the Fighting Irish, their only two goals of the game came from graduate forward Sutter Muzzatti, both in the second and third periods. Muzzatti also led Notre Dame in shots, racking up five.

The scoring began 6:44 into the game when Quinnipaic scored its  first and only goal on the power play by Verreault to give them a 1-0 lead.

A little under eight minutes later, the Bobcats picked up their second goal of the period, this time on a five-on-five. Junior forward Mason Marcellus scored to make it 2-0.

In the second period, Quinnipaic continued to be the more physical and dominant team, and first-year forward Markus Vidicek scored unassisted to extend the lead to three.

Muzzatti scored his first goal of the season just over a minute later to cut the lead to 3-1, but about five minutes later, the Bobcats struck back to regain a three-goal lead. Sophomore forward Chris Pelosi was the goal scorer to make it 4-1

In the third period, the Quinnipaic continued its scoring onslaught, with two goals within the first five minutes of the period. First-year forward Ethan Wyttenbach picked up his first goal at the NCAA level, and sophomore forward Aaron Schwartz picked up his third point of the game to make it 6-1.

Schwartz had assists on the first two goals of the game for the Bobcats and was one of two players who picked up three points in the game – the other player being Marcellus.

The Fighting Irish scored their second goal of the game with Muzzatti scoring his second goal of the game on a deflection up front. The play was reviewed for the stick being too high above the net, but the ruling on the ice was upheld.

Notre Dame sophomore goaltender Nicholas Kemp stopped 31 of the 38 shots he faced on the day, but he would be roughed up at the end of the game.

Around the halfway mark of the third period, a Notre Dame defender pushed a Bobcat into Kempf, who went down on his stomach momentarily before getting himself up. Kempf received applause from the crowd as he stayed in the game.

A few minutes later, senior forward Jeremy Wilmer interfered with Kempf, receiving a two-minute minor for goaltender interference.

Quinnipaic scored the final goal of the game with 7 1/2 seconds left by Verreault, who went backhand forehand on Kempf to seal the 7-2 victory.

The Bobcats move to 2-2 on the season with a split in the Ice Breaker Tournament. They return home for a two-game series against No. 7 Maine next weekend, a huge early-season matchup.

The Fighting Irish drop to 0-2 on the season, with the Ice Breaker Tournament being their first two games of the season. They will return home to Compton Family Ice Arena to host St. Lawrence in a two-game series.
