TEMPE, Ariz.-- Arizona State soccer’s slump continued Sunday, as it drew against the Iowa State Cyclones.
Coming into Sunday’s affair, the Sun Devils looked to get back into the win column, with
Their last win coming in early October against Cincinnati.
Since its first loss of the season, ASU has gone on a less-than-impressive run, winning one of its last four, including two performances against Colorado and West Virginia, which resulted in two zero-point performances.
Throughout most of the game, it was an early defensive slugfest as the first score wouldn't come until the 67:34 minute mark. The game also provided physical play, as both teams committed fouls with the Sun Devils having 11 fouls.
Senior forward Tatum Thomason took the most shots for ASU during the opening half, resulting in no points.
Freshman forward Addison Baltodano and sophomore forward Sierra Bergen followed up Thomason with shots of their own during the first half.
Iowa State provided a more aggressive approach in the first half, attempting eight shots but not capitalizing on them.
Freshman forward Megan Walters and junior midfielder Lucy Froitzheim provided much of this output for the Cyclones during this half.
Sun Devils senior goalkeeper Pauline Nelles provided excellent saves during the first period, as she looked to bounce back after giving up seven goals in the last four games. Nelles provided great defense around the box as Iowa State had plenty of free-kick opportunities.
After a defensive showdown in the first half, the game saw an even score on both sides.
To start the second half of action, both teams provided much of the same strategy throughout the early portions of the second period.
It wasn’t until the 52:21 minute of the second period that something significant happened. Froitzheim of the Cyclones was provided a yellow card by the referee for unsporting behavior.
However, ASU still failed to find any type of momentum off the yellow card after another unsuccessful shot by Thomanson.
About halfway into the period, the Sun Devils received a corner kick, which gave the team a spark.
Though nothing materialized from the kick, the sequence that followed gave ASU the lead as junior defender Lucy Fazackerley scored off a Baltodano assist to give her team its first lead of the game.
Momentum favored the Sun Devils down the stretch, as they looked to increase their lead, being aggressive in driving the ball down the field, leading to two more corner kicks.
The Cyclone defense down the stretch saved the team, as Baltodano and senior defender Izzy Monck attempted two near lead-extending goals, which ended up being blocked.
After a sequence of fouls and great defense by both teams, disaster struck for the Sun Devils.
With less than 5 minutes left in the game, the Cyclones found the soft spot in the box and capitalized, as senior forward Taylor Spitzer scored the game-tying goal off the assist from her teammate, senior defender Isabella Agrusso.
After a near-perfect game on defense and looking to end their slump, ASU allowed a simple mistake down the stretch.
During the last five minutes of the game, both teams played hurry-up ball in a last-minute effort. However, the clock hit zero and ended in a draw
The Sun Devils’ record moves to 9-4-3.
