Sun Devils fight back to force overtime; fall 4-3 at Jamestown

Arizona State Women’s Club Hockey battled late to force overtime on the road against the University of Jamestown, but ultimately fell 4-3.

With the overtime loss, the Sun Devils now hold a 4-1-2 record on the season, remaining undefeated in regulation while showing they can compete in tight games. The team has started the season strong, pushing every opponent and proving they can battle back even when facing early deficits.

ASU struggled early, allowing two goals in the first six minutes of the game. The Sun Devils got on the board with a power-play goal from Breanne Powell late in the first period, but Jamestown responded quickly to keep a 3-1 lead after the opening frame.

Despite the slow start, goaltender Mya Glaister became the key factor in keeping ASU within reach. She turned aside 42 shots in the game, making big saves throughout the second period as the Sun Devils worked to find offensive momentum.

ASU finally started to break through in the third. Kyly Laybolt cut the deficit to one with an unassisted goal at 9:53. Then, with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Powell struck again with her second goal of the afternoon, tying the game 3-3, and giving ASU a huge boost heading into overtime.

However, overtime was short-lived. A tripping penalty against ASU just five seconds into the extra period put the Jimmies on the power play, and they capitalized at 1:39 to secure the 4-3 win.

For Jamestown, goalie Lilah Drew made 30 saves, helping Jamestown hold off ASU’s late surge.

The Sun Devils finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while Jamestown went 1-for-3.

Even with the loss, ASU showed strong fight on the road, especially with the team’s defensive effort and late-game push to force overtime. The Sun Devils look to carry that same energy forward as their road trip continues.
