ST. LOUIS - Homesickness infects us all at some point, and it seems to be hitting hard for the Arizona State women’s hockey team.
During their road trip east this week, the Sun Devils were unable to bring a win back to Tempe, as the Maryville Saints took them down 8-1 during the late-night game.
Junior forward Amelia Smolinski scored the Saints’ first goal in the first period. This goal turned into a firestarter that led Maryville to score six more unanswered goals in the first and second periods.
While the first period was relatively calm, with the Saints holding ASU to a 3-0 deficit, Maryville ramped up the scoring in the second, leaving the Sun Devils fighting tooth and nail in the third.
ASU found a glimmer of hope in the third, thanks to junior forward Breanne Powell scoring one for the team immediately after the Saints’ eighth goal of the night
While Maryville had an easy two-thirds of the game, ASU never stopped putting up a fight. The team has just come off a series loss against McKendree University and entered the Maryville Hockey Center looking to learn from their past couple of games and turn that into a return to the win column.
After tonight’s game, however, it looks like there are even more lessons to take onto the ice as they look to the rematch tomorrow night.
The Sun Devils were unable to keep up with Maryville’s power tonight, and it seems there is a lot of rebuilding to be done when ASU returns home to take on its familiar foe, Grand Canyon University, next week.
