TEMPE, Ariz. — After winning in overtime against No. 3 Denver last Saturday, Arizona State hockey found itself tied at two again heading into overtime against Ohio State.
In the extra frame, the Sun Devils broke out on a 2-on-1. Sophomore forward Cullen Potter drove to the net and passed to his right to senior forward Cruz Lucius.
Lucius snapped the puck past junior goaltender Kristoffer Eberly to clinch the win.
“You don't know whether you want to be a little bit unselfish or not,” Lucius said. “But I just saw the five hole open and shot as hard as I could in there.”
As the ASU players rushed to the student section and crashed into the glass, the hope was that the team would find more consistency after a sluggish start, similar to last season.
“It was a gritty win for us,” head coach Greg Powers said. “I felt like we deserved it. I felt like we did a lot of really good things tonight.”
The game was evenly contested, with the Sun Devils outshooting Ohio State 33-32. ASU generated several offensive chances but struggled to convert.
“We just couldn't seem to find the back of the net,” Powers said. “It felt like one of those games where we’re doing a lot of things right, getting a lot of really good grade A’s and a lot of good looks. Their goalie made some big saves and we missed some tap-ins.”
Ohio State opened the scoring with a goal from senior forward and captain David Burnside.
The Sun Devils went on their first power play a few minutes later, and Potter buried a wrist shot to tie the game at 1.
Potter, drafted 32nd overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, finished Friday’s win with two points, including the assist on the overtime goal.
“It was really just a long time coming for him,” Lucius said. “He gets so many opportunities a game and he has the puck on his stick all the time. When you’re getting those chances, pucks are gonna go. I’m really happy for him.”
ASU converted on its first power play but had three more chances with the man advantage and couldn’t generate much offense.
“I thought our power play tonight was a little bit sloppy and it needs to be a lot sharper tomorrow. Their kill was really good,” Powers said. “We didn't generate a lot of good looks on the power play like we normally do.”
Ohio State had two power plays nearly back to back, with the second coming moments after ASU killed the first. The Sun Devils’ penalty kill held strong, and the Buckeyes failed to score on either opportunity.
The game also brought several big hits as both teams leaned into the physicality.
“They were hitting, we were hitting. I wouldn't say it was anything crazy,” Lucius said. “I think it was an up-and-down game with a lot of skill and two really good goalies.”
ASU looks to build momentum as it moves closer to the heart of conference play. The Sun Devils finish their series with the Buckeyes on Saturday before a two-game set with Dartmouth next week.
With two consecutive overtime wins, ASU hopes victories like this can help it regain the stride it had last season.
“Just a little bit of urgency and desperation,” Powers said. “Our guys know we need to reel off some wins here, and it’s just experience. It was a really gutsy win. It felt like our guys weren't gonna let that one go, and they didn’t. I’m really proud of them.”
