MARYVILLE, Mo. — Arizona State came to Maryville hoping to end its losing streak, but the Sun Devils couldn’t keep up. Maryville stayed strong, beating ASU 5–3 for the Sun Devils fifth straight loss.
Maryville scored first, just over four minutes into the first period. Sophomore forward Haley Beckett found some open space and put the puck in the net to make it 1-0.
ASU responded quickly, and on a power play at 8:54, junior forward Breanne Powell got a pass from Samantha Murphy and scored to tie the game 1-1.
However, penalties started to hurt the Sun Devils early. After a tripping call on ASU, Maryville scored on the power play at 11:22 to take a 2-1 lead. Both teams traded penalties through the rest of the first period, but the score held as ASU struggled to find rhythm at even strength.
The second period opened rough for the Sun Devils. Just 35 seconds in, Maryville scored again on the power play to go up 3-1. Sophomore forward Kyly Laybolt scored at 1:31 after a quick breakout started by Powell, bringing the game to 3-2 and giving ASU some much needed momentum.
Maryville stayed strong on offense and kept the pressure on ASU. At 5:26, they scored their third power play goal of the afternoon, pushing the lead to 4-2. ASU battled back, with Graduate forward Samantha Murphy scoring with an assist from Freshman defenseman Ruby Deliz at 7:23 to bring the score to 4-3. Her goal set the energy for the Sun Devils, sparking a comeback mentality in the second.
Unfortunately for the Sun Devils, Maryville added one more. Junior forward Hailey Putnam scored to make it 5-3. It was a tough moment for ASU, especially after working to close that one point deficit.
The third period was the cleanest and calmest for the Sun Devils. They controlled more puck possession, tightened their defense and stayed out of the penalty box. ASU earned a power play at 4:32 but could not get one past Maryville goalie Bella Tresek.
Sun Devil goalie Katie Glaister had one of the strongest performances of the game, making 40 saves on 45 shots. Tresek finished with 28 saves for Maryville.
ASU ended the game with 31 shots to Maryville’s 45, and went 1-for-4 on the power play. The three Maryville power-play goals ended up being the difference.
Even with the loss, the Sun Devils showed energy through the lineup. Powell, Laybolt, and Murphy all scored, giving ASU balanced offense. The team also had stronger stretches in the third, holding Maryville scoreless and controlling the pace much better than in the earlier periods.
The Sun Devils will return to Arizona to get ready for their next game at Grand Canyon University. They hope to play better defense and finally stop their five-game losing streak against their city rivals.
