The Arizona State Sun Devils extended their winning ways, as they defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions 74-60 at Bryce Jordan Center on Tuesday, Dec 9.
Multiple people contributed for the Sun Devils, but no star shone brighter than fifth-year guard Gabby Elliott, who made her return against the white and navy.
Elliott tallied 27 points on 10-for-20 shooting, 2-for-5 from downtown. For her, it did not pick up until the second quarter, as has been the theme for the Sun Devils this season, the offense started slow in the first.
In the first quarter, ASU went 6-for-20 from the field and only 1-for-5 from three. The Sun Devils got outrebounded down low 17 to 10, allowing the Nittany Lions to generate an early 18-13 lead.
However, that is why there are four quarters.
ASU Head coach Molly Miller and her squad have done what they have done well all year and came out strong in the second quarter.
The Sun Devils, led by freshman guard Amaya Williams, who had six points this quarter, outscored the Nittany Lions 20-to-4 and generated nine turnovers compared to their two.
Senior guard Marley Washenitz hit an early shot in the game; however, due to foul trouble, she only played three minutes in the first half before later fouling out in the second half.
The one thing that has hurt ASU in the past did not repeat itself tonight: the 3-point shooting on both sides of the ball.
Junior forward McKinna Brackens kept her hot start to the season rolling Tuesday night as she recorded her fifth double-double of the season. Brackens ended the game with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting and tallied 11 boards, four on the offensive glass and seven on the defensive side of the ball. Brackens also led the way with five of the teams 18 total steals.
The Sun Devils held the Nittany Lions, who were shooting just under 40% from three, to a 20% clip, going 4-for-20. On the flip side, the Sun Devils, who were shooting just under 30% from three, went 33.3% from three, shooting 4-for-12.
One thing that coach Miller will look to correct the ship on is the rebounding. ASU got outrebounded 39-to-35 and gave up more points in the paint, 32 compared to 24.
The Sun Devils look to keep their undefeated season alive on the road against Oregon State Sunday, Dec 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the Gill Coliseum.
