Amazing Goaltending And First Time Goal Leads To Third Straight Win

TEMPE— It was all Sun Devils on Wednesday night, Jan. 21, against the University of Utah, cruising to a second-straight shutout victory.

“It feels amazing,” freshman goalie Mya Glaister said. “It’s a team effort, I'm hoping to keep this going for the rest of the semester and take home a championship.”

Glaister grabs her third shutout of the season and second in the last two games for ASU after saving 23 shot attempts from the Utes. The Sun Devils grabbed their third win in a row from goals throughout many of their lines and improved to 10-6-1-1, good for first in the Independent with 22 points.

But, it was a special moment for one ASU defenseman who was finally glad to send the puck to the back of the net, and got the first goal of her collegiate career.

“I'm feeling awesome,” sophomore defenseman Kate Streek said. “The energy on the bench is so good today. The girls are hyping me up, so I'm finally glad it happened.”

Streek's goal gave the Sun Devils a comfortable lead midway through the second period, after an early second-period goal by the transfer junior forward Cam Devenney, her sixth goal on the season.

Although for ASU this momentum hasn’t just appeared from thin air, it's been brewed up through practices and supporting one another day in and day out.

“I think coming out on and off the edge every day and supporting one another just truly helps our team build, Glasiter said.” It just makes us better athletes and better people.”

This momentum has helped the Sun Devils outscore their opponents 12-2 in their last 3 games. With a gameplan set for the start of each game, it’s what truly gets these girls ready to hit the ice.

“Our team has a lot of speed,” junior forward Breanne Powell said. “We're just going to come out hard and move our feet and use that time and space that we can create because we're such a fast team.”

This wasn’t the first time ASU has matched up against Utah. It’s been two years, but the Sun Devils are 6-0 in matches since and have outscored the Utes, 19-5, in those last six matches dating back to Oct. 2023.

“We've played Utah before,” Powell said. They are a very physical team, and we are also very physical. We play against each other with physicality, and we also use that to our advantage, get our bodies in lanes, eliminate their players before they can get the puck, and then roll off of that and get some shots.”

However, ASU had three chances on the power play and was able to capitalize on the second advantage, something they've been on and off with all season so far. It’s been something that they’ve been prioritizing during games and practices.

“I think we've just been working a lot in practice on power play and kind of moving the puck the way we wanted to go,” Streek said. “Today, it just really worked out in our favor. We’ve taken lots of good shots, and we're making really good passes today.”

The Sun Devils look to keep their winning streak alive and that adrenaline pumping as they take on the Lindenwood Lions in two weeks.

“We are just taking it one game at a time,” Glaister said. Each game is so important in this last little run. Just trying to build up one goal at a time, and just take it from there.”
