TEMPE, Ariz– In Division II men’s club hockey, Arizona State (13-7-1-2) took down Denver (14-10-3-0) in a 3-2 overtime thriller on Jan. 30. This came after ASU held a pregame ceremony to honor its seniors.
An eventful game had an uneventful start with no goals or penalties by either the Sun Devils or the Pioneers in the first period. Denver started the game with 12 unanswered shots, but none got through goal keeper Matiss Bars.
Most of the second period was more of the same until a potential goal by ASU defenseman Mason Amelse was called off due to hitting the puck in with his glove. After the play was over, captain Ethan Belletini received a 10-minute misconduct for abuse of a referee.
The first penalty of the game was an interference by Denver forward Cody Bjorndal with 53 seconds to go in the second period. Only seven seconds into the power play, the Sun Devils finally opened the scoring with Ethan Saunders’s team-leading 14th goal of the season.
The third period would start with ASU forward Jack Perry committing a tripping minor with just over 14 minutes to go in the third period. Just after the penalty concluded, the Pioneers would find an equalizer off the stick of Bjorndal.
Denver took two penalties in the middle frame of the period, both by defenseman Shane Siegmund, but ASU was unable to capitalize on either power play.
After a goal was called off for a kicking motion, the Pioneers would take their first lead of the game when forward Henry Seebeck scored with 1:07 remaining in regulation.
In a last-gasp effort by the Sun Devils, senior forward Jack Haddock wacked the puck out of the air to even the game at two with 7.9 seconds to go in regulation.
To cap off the incredible goal, ASU won in overtime when Nicholas Maffeo received a superb pass from Matthew Kimball to give the Sun Devils their 13th win of the season.
The shots finished in favor of Denver by a margin of 40-37.
This ended up being Denver’s third straight loss going into a game on Saturday against Grand Canyon.
The Sun Devils will try to make it three straight wins on Saturday when they play host to the Colorado Buffaloes.
