Arizona State Women’s Hockey snatched the rubber match against Lake Superior State in an uneven matchup on Sunday, Jan. 18.
The Sun Devils shut out the Lakers 5-0 on Sunday, lifting ASU to a 2-1 weekend series win at Mullet Arena in Tempe. ASU controlled the entire game from the very start, unlike on Friday and Saturday. Sunday marked the Sun Devils’ first shutout since Nov. 7, 2025, when freshman goaltender Mya Glaister collected her first win.
ASU opened up the scoring halfway through the first period with a goal from sophomore forward Kyly Laybolt, her fourth of the season.
Laybolt didn't stop just a few minutes into the second period, as she struck again, netting her fifth of the season and the insurance goal for the Sun Devils.
Soon after, senior forward Kylie Brown scored unassisted on a breakaway, extending the lead by one and grabbing her eighth goal this season.
However, ASU finished the night with two more goals late in the second period, on a power play by Brown, her ninth, and about halfway through the third period, junior forward Cameron Devenney scored, giving her her fifth.
Although the Sun Devils won by a big margin, both teams made mistakes – a combined four penalty opportunities. ASU ultimately scored on only one of its chances, while the Lakers went scoreless.
Additionally, Lake Superior State won the first game of this series 3-2 in a hard-fought battle against this sneaky Sun Devil team. Yet, ASU outscored the Lakers 9-2 in the next two games.
On the other hand, this was the first time the Lakers had been shut out since Nov. 4, 2025, when they were shut out 4-0 by Michigan-Dearborn in back-to-back games.
Heading into the crease, the goaltending for the Lakers was a bit shaky. Senior goalie Asia Kachuk was pulled after two periods, surrendering four goals on 29 shot attempts and dropping to 5-5-0-0 on the season.
While senior goalie Laney Pasemko came in for the final period and gave up one goal on 21 shots from the Sun Devils.
Sunday's game was also the first shutout of Glaister since Nov. 7, 2025, against the University of Arizona. Boosting her record to 5-3-0-1 on the season with ASU.
However, Lake Superior State looks to improve from this loss on Sunday with a two-game series against Indiana Tech next weekend on the road.
ASU improves to two games up .500, as it looks ahead to a one-game set against the Utah Utes on this upcoming Wednesday at home in Tempe.
