Windle and Pond homer, put away Portland State

TEMPE, Ariz.- With a loss around the horizon, senior outfielder Tanya Windle and senior outfielder Kaylee Pond turned the game around in a matter of minutes.

After Portland State (2-4) threatened an upset early, Arizona State (5-1) rallied back down the stretch on Friday, Feb. 12, at  Farrington Stadium. Windle and Pond took the fans off their feet in a double-digit scoring effort by the Sun Devils.

Windle started off the late game scoring by homering the ball out of the park with senior catcher Millie Roberts on first. Shortly after, with two runners on base, Pond clobbered a ball over the outfield to extend the lead to 11-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Similarly, Windle caught a game-saving ball in the top half of the inning with the bases loaded to put ASU back on offense for its huge sixth inning.

Despite the late-game heroics, both teams struggled early on with pitching. Sun Devils senior pitcher Alissa Silva only recorded one strikeout and gave up all five of the Vikings’ runs.

Portland State freshman pitcher Giselle Pantoja also had a rough showing, giving up 12 hits, nine runs and only one strikeout.

In contrast, ASU junior pitcher Meika Lauppe went into the game and supplied better pitching down the stretch for the Sun Devils. Lauppe recorded three strikeouts with only two runs given up in three innings of work.

ASU provided most of their scoring in the starting and ending moments of the game, scoring five runs in both the first and sixth innings. Late game comebacks followed in this game, following the win against Memphis on Sunday, Feb. 8.

Although the Sun Devils won the game, Portland State tied the game in the third inning when junior outfielder Jolee Benson and junior catcher Allison Harris struck beautiful balls past the infielders.

Fear set into the fans at Farrington early, but Bartlett made mid-game adjustments to seal the win.

As ASU starts off the Littlewood invitational on a strong note, tougher competition awaits them in the coming week.
