Di Genova crushes two bombs, pitching carries Nevada to win

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Littlewood Invitational entered its second day of competition at Farrington Stadium, but Nevada had yet to play a game in the tournament. Despite the overcast skies, the Wolfpack lit up the scoreboard with a pair of homers from senior first baseman Hannah Di Genova.

Di Genova accounted for three of Nevada’s six RBI in the contest, which was more than enough for Nevada (4-2) to take down Portland State (2-6) 6-1 on Friday, Feb. 13.

The Wolfpack started the game hot, scoring at least one run in each of the first three innings. This early spark by Nevada would not be matched by the Vikings for the entirety of the game, as they only managed to get three hits.

Portland State’s only source of offense was in the third inning, when sophomore left fielder Nichole Orozco drove in freshman infielder Mia Martinez to cut the score to 2-1. The Vikings got two of their three hits in this frame.

A large factor of Portland State’s struggles stemmed from a dominant performance by Nevada senior pitcher Tess Bumiller, who pitched a complete game and only let through one earned run and three hits while striking out five in the process.

Both teams made errors in the infield, but the Wolfpack capitalized on the opportunities, while the Vikings could not. While it did draw three walks, Portland State did not record a single hit with a runner in scoring position.

Nevada will play their next game against Arizona State Friday evening in an effort to keep their momentum going.

Portland State will be scrambling for their first win of the tournament against Pacific Friday afternoon.
