Five-run fourth inning powers Nevada to victory over Pacific

TEMPE, Ariz. — Nevada (5-4) faced off against Pacific (1-7) in the Littlewood Invitational, now the 24th matchup between these two programs.

Led by a three-run home run by senior first baseman Hannah DiGenova and a solo home run by sophomore pitcher Talia Tretton, the Wolf Pack would proceed to score all five of their runs in the fourth inning. Leading to a 5-0 victory over the Tigers in seven innings at Farrington Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 14.

The top of the fourth inning was the turning point of this game. Neither team could manage to get anything going up to that point in the game.

The top of the fourth had all of the five runs scored in Saturday night's game. Nevada hit not one but two home runs in this inning.

DiGenova had a three-run shot deep to center field, and Tretton had a solo home run that was deep to left field to score the fourth run of the inning.

The Wolf Pack weren’t quite done yet, as with two outs in the inning, freshman infielder Anna Braukus would hit a RBI single to second base to score the fifth and final run of the inning.

Di Genova played in 54 games last season and started in all but one of those games. In those games, Di Genova would have a .326 batting average, 47 hits, seven home runs and 44 RBI.

In nine games played so far this season, DiGenova has started in all nine and already has three home runs.

As for Tretton, she has now started and played in eight games this season and has two home runs on the year.

In her freshman year last season at Iowa, Tretton would post a 10-9 record for the Hawkeyes. As one of the two primary pitchers for Iowa, she threw for 122.1 innings with a 3.32 ERA.

Along with making 28 pitching appearances with 21 starts. Tretton also struck out 97 batters while walking 61.

At the plate, she hit at a .173 clip in 98 at-bats, tallying 17 hits total with two home runs and driving in 25.

Both DiGenova and Tretton are off to a great start this season.

On a side note, Tretton pitched a complete-game shutout.

Tretton would pitch all seven innings, allowing just four hits in those innings. Tretton walked three batters, struck out one, and didn’t allow a single run to score.

It was a fantastic performance from the Sophomore and the Wolf Pack in general.

At the end of the day, the Tigers struggled to take advantage of base runner opportunities that were given to them via the three walks by Tretton.

However, between the powerful offensive performance at the top of the fourth and the outstanding two-way performance by Tretton, there was no chance for Pacific to win tonight's ball game.
