TEMPE, Ariz.— The No. 22 Arizona State Sun Devils (8-1) dominated the Portland State Vikings (3-7) 20-2 in five innings, remaining undefeated at the 2026 Littlewood Invitational.
The opening frame was quiet for both sides, with Portland State sophomore outfielder Nichole Orozco recording the game's lone hit through the first inning.
The bottom of the first was also quick and unproductive for the Sun Devils, as three quick groundouts came and went, pushing the matchup into the second inning tied at 0-0.
Going into the second inning, the Vikings remained off to a cold start that lasted the entire matchup.
After three outs once again for PSU, the Sun Devils came out to bat, but this time with no mercy.
Despite tallying zero hits or any offensive momentum in the first inning, the Sun Devils added 11 runs to the score on seven hits in the bottom of the second.
Junior catcher Samantha Swan was the first Sun Devil to touch first base after being walked by senior pitcher Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung.
Offensive momentum really picked up after a bunt by Brooklyn Ulrich, a senior outfielder, who capitalized on an error by senior outfielder Grace Johnson, allowing Swan to advance to third and Ulrich to second.
The first run of the afternoon came from the first batter to touch first base for ASU, as a ball that got away from the catcher led Swan to home plate, giving the Sun Devils the first run of the game.
ASU softball veteran and senior outfielder Tanya Windle came up next in the batting order and hit an RBI double to left field, sending Ulrich home for ASU.
After giving up three runs, the Vikings' pitching staff made a change at the circle, replacing Nakoa-Chung with freshman pitcher Giselle Pantoja.
With ASU up 4-0 with only one out, senior and center fielder Kaylee Pond knocked one out of the ballpark for a three-run home run, her fourth of the season.
Pond leads the team in home runs and has been a key part of the offense this season. Starting in all eight games so far, Pond has a .318 batting average, nine runs, seven hits and a team-leading seven RBI.
The Sun Devils continued to heat up after a two-RBI double by junior second baseman Yazzy Avila. Windle was once again up to bat, sending a two-run homer to deep center field, extending the Sun Devils’ lead to 11-0 at the bottom of the second.
Also, at the end of the second, Portland State once again made a pitching change with junior Anna Jardin relieving Pantoja after allowing five hits and eight runs while recording just two outs.
Portland State struggled to find any momentum in the third, with a foul-out and back-to-back ground-outs, cutting its time on deck short.
While not as successful as its second inning, the third inning proved ASU’s offensive dominance with seven more runs tacked on in just five hits, ending the inning up 18-0.
With only an inning and a half to go until the mercy rule kicked in, PSU found a little spark in its offense, scoring its only two runs of the matchup on a RBI double from sophomore utility Abby Carsley and an RBI single from junior outfielder Jolee Benson.
In the bottom of the fourth, ASU added the final nail in the coffin, with an RBI double from freshman catcher Brooke Piwowar and another RBI double from redshirt freshman utility Corrie Shull.
Throwing only five pitches at the top of the fifth, ASU sealed the victory in only five innings, winning 20-2.
ASU has two more games to play in the Littlewood Invitational, as the Sun Devils look to go undefeated in their second invitational of the year.
