TEMPE, Ariz. – In a close game against Marquette, Arizona State Lacrosse's offensive unit stepped up and helped secure a win at home on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
The Sun Devil offense wasted no time getting started, with senior attackers Jordyn Behar, Lydia Oldknow and Teagan Ng all scoring within three minutes of each other. ASU ended the first quarter with a 4-1 lead.
Throughout the whole game, the Sun Devil offense was non-stop. It was a day when every scorer found the back of the net multiple times.
“Our attacking unit was on fire.” head coach Taryn VanThof Puls said. “I think you saw multiple goals out of all of four, all four of them any given day, one of them steps up.”
The team's main attacking unit consists of Behar, Ng, Oldknow and sophomore attacker Addie Shevitz.
Behar ended the game with six goals — a new career high. While Ng ended with five, Oldknow with a hat trick, Shevitz also with a hat trick and sophomore midfielder Teagan Lowery scored twice. It was a collective effort to get all 19 goals.
“I think you have to guard all of us.” Behar said. “You can’t leave one of us open. Everyone is a threat.”
It was also a big day for freshman goalkeeper Gabriella Henry, who had her first career start, as the Sun Devils continue to find their new starter.
After ASU dominated the first quarter, Marquette's offense turned the corner, as it scored six goals. The Sun Devils, however, maintained a lead as they maintained their offensive momentum.
The teams went into halftime with the Sun Devils leading 11-7. At this point, Behar had already achieved a hat trick and two assists. Ng scored four goals in the same time period.
The most noticeable difference between the first two quarters was the scoring. While both teams scored a similar number of goals, they didn't do that in the first quarter.
Marquette scored once before, and the Sun Devils heavily outscored it at that point with four.
“I think a game of momentum really ebbs and flows.” VanThof Puls said. “And I think we kind of lulled ourselves in moments where we were capitalizing at a really high rate.”
Less than a minute into the third quarter, Marquette's Megan Hansen was removed after receiving her second yellow card of the match for dangerous contact.
During the third quarter, both teams capitalized when the other was down a player, coincidentally, both scored three goals while playing a man up.
The Sun Devil defense struggled to keep up with Marquette's offense when they were a man up. Marquette took advantage of this and kept up with the Sun Devil offense, keeping the game close. ASU ended the third quarter ahead 16-13.
In the fourth quarter, both teams scored three goals each. Throughout Tuesday afternoon, there were plenty of fouls and cards given out on both sides, and by the fourth quarter, the spectators were quite passionate about the referee's decisions from the stands.
In the end, the Sun Devils held on to win 19-16. Now they prepare to take on the USC Trojans (3-2) at home on Feb. 28.
