Arizona State cruises behind another big day from Viglione

TEMPE, Ariz. – The hot desert sun didn't stop Arizona State junior midfielder Anna Viglione from a morning full of domination.

The Sun Devils (5-3) downed Akron (5-2) 14-8 at Sun Devil Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium on Wednesday, March 11. ASU led the entire game after scoring three goals before the Zips had a possession.

Although it wasn't all dominant, Viglione had another spectacular day on the logo for the Sun Devils, winning 17 draw controls in the win. In addition, ASU came out on top in all 11 draws in the second half.

“Anna is a constant force for us,” Sun Devils head coach Taryn VanThof Puls said. “She’s got a very high standalone, a very high expectation. She embraces it, it's not pressure for her; it's a privilege.”

Viglione set the ASU record for draw controls earlier this year against Niagara with 21, and Wednesday marks her third consecutive game with 17 or more.

Viglione’s recent success backs up the various honors she earned before the campaign, being named the unanimous Big 12 preseason draw specialist of the year and selected to the preseason All-Big 12 team.

While Viglione was dominant, the Sun Devils offense faced a fair share of struggles on Wednesday. A big part of ASU’s offensive issues sat in between the pipes, as redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Adrianna Califano put together a strong game in net for the Zips.

“I credit their keeper,” VanThof Puls said when talking about the slow offense. “She made some really good saves on us.”

Califano’s 10 saves set a new career high in her two seasons at Akron.

The Sun Devils also held strong on the defensive end, with sophomore goalkeeper Regan Spichiger tallying 10 saves as well. Spichiger got the start for the sixth time in ASU’s eight games, but the team has used three different goalkeepers so far this season.

VanThof Puls said "consistency" is the most important thing for Spichiger down the stretch if she wants to continue playing at a high level.

The Sun Devils’ offense came from a wide range of places on Wednesday. Senior attacker Teagan Ng led the scoring charge for ASU with three goals, while three other Sun Devils netted multiple goals.

In the end, the biggest contributor on the offensive side for ASU turned out to be senior attacker Jordyn Behar. While she only scored one goal, Behar assisted on six scores, increasing her team-leading total to 29 this season.

“Jordyn is a dodger and a fielder, she’s gonna put balls in the back of the net,” VanThof Puls said. “But, she's also gonna dish out and give beautiful assists to her teammates and today that's where she shined.”

Sun Devils senior attacker Lydia Oldknow also buried two goals on Wednesday. Alongside Ng, Oldknow plays a pivotal role in ASU’s scoring this season, as the senior pair are tied for the team high at 28 goals.

After playing seven straight at home, the Sun Devils hit the road for eight of their final nine games before the Big 12 Tournament.

However, the fourth-year ASU head coach is excited for the challenge.

“We got some really good opponents coming up, but the time together, whether it's on the bus, on the flight, really getting to unite as a group more,” VanThof Puls said. “Home’s great, but sometimes we’re not getting that quality time together off the field.”
