TEMPE, Ariz. – On a night where Arizona State (2-3) won 17-7 at home under the lights against Niagara (1-4) on Thursday, March 5, a new program record became the main storyline of the evening.
By the end of the first half, ASU senior attacker Teagan Ng broke her second program record, as she passed the program's all-time scoring record, surpassing the previous record of 146 goals set by Kerri Clayton in 2020.
Ng also netted a hat trick within the first 15 minutes of the game and scored six goals total, ending the game with a career total of 148 goals.
“It was awesome to see that record broken,” head coach Taryn VanThof Puls said. “I guarantee it’s going to get broken a few more times this year, back and forth.”
Prior to the game against Niagara, Ng already set the program record for most goals in a single season with 70 in the 2024-25 season. Her consistency in producing offensive results for the Sun Devils over the last several seasons makes her one of the most reliable attackers in program history.
ASU senior attacker Lydia Oldknow, who is also a major part of the offensive unit, is at 139 career goals.
Oldknow and Ng are the team’s top two scorers, and it is not uncommon for the pair to score multiple goals each in every game. The two tend to finish with similar statistics in each game.
At the pace they are going, it won't be long until Oldknow reaches 147 goals herself and surpasses the previous record. There is also the possibility that Oldknow could even catch up and surpass Ng, taking over the all-time scoring record by the end of her senior season.
Along with senior attacker Jordyn Behar, the way Ng and Oldknow are able to create opportunities for the others to score makes them powerful and threatening to opposing defenses, being the players that defenses and goalkeepers tend to pay a little more attention to.
Numerous players broke multiple program records over the past two seasons, so it's no shock when it continues to happen.
As VanThof Puls said, it’s pretty much a “guarantee.”
In the team's previous game, junior midfielder Anna Viglione passed the program’s all-time draw control record, previously held by current Sun Devils assistant coach Zoe Mazur in 2024. Viglione eclipsed the previous record of 330, ending the game with 332 controls and eventually being named the Big 12 Draw Specialist of the Week.
Aside from the previous accolades, Viglione made a notable offensive impact against the Purple Eagles. She took all of the faceoffs for ASU and focused on getting that ball. Gaining possession is obviously a strength for Viglione, the only player on either team with more than one control.
“I mean, Anna Viglione had a day,” VanThof Puls said. “I don't even know how many she had. What, 21 (draw controls)? Yeah. She broke her own record, and broke the ASU record.”
As ASU hopes to keep the momentum from this win, the team prepares to host Bucknell at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium at 12 p.m. AZT on Sunday, March 8.
However, with the season in full swing, VanThof Puls remains focused on the growth of her team.
“We’re getting better every week and that's all I can ask for.”
